Tim Hunter
VP of Operations

It was a historic preseason here in New York with our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff covering 700+ players at showcase events, all February long. The dust has settled and we are now ramping up our efforts in player rankings, scouting reports, and recap articles. While the outcome of the 2020 HS season is on hold, the Prep Baseball Report (NY) will continue to provide unrivaled coverage for the amateur baseball players in the Empire State.

As we continue our follow up of the Preseason Tour, we will be highlighting "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who recently stood-out at our preseason events. Stay tuned with us for the latest information on the 2020 spring season and beyond.

Scouting Report

Physical: 6-foot-0, 155-pounds. Lean, lengthy build.  4.43 home-to-1B.
Offensively: RHH. Starts tall with a slight bend in knees, small leg kick, hands are level with chin. Level swing through the zone, strong contact hitter with quick hands. Strong contact; stays up the middle. 81 MPH raw exit velocity.
Defensively: Good footwork, approaches the ball with controlled mechanics and is accurate to the target. Long, over the top throw.  OF - 81 MPH.
Pitching: Builds momentum with a short drop step into a high leg lift, gets into the back side as he strides out to a slightly open landing, finishes with a balanced follow through. Long arm swing to a 3/4 slot. FB: T79, 77-79 MPH. Arm side run with life into the zone. CB: 65-67 MPH. Locates in the zone with 11-5 shape; slows up a bit.  CH: 67-68 MPH. Slows arm speed a bit and the ball cuts across.

Standout Skill
Callaghan really stood out to me as a undeveloped, but raw tools on the mound. With the proper fixes mechanically and some works with his grips, he could be very dangerous on the rubber. He wi only grow and add on some weight so watch as his velocity climbs. Callaghan has the ability to fill up the zone with three pitches and his whippy arm action is a plus.
Player Projection
I see Callaghan becoming a nice two-way player. He has some velocity already off the mound at a young age and with mechanical fixes he could add even more MPH. Defensively, I think depending on how much he grows and how strong he gets, a potential move to maybe 1B could be an option if there's some life in his bat continuing forward. He has the footwork for OF and a strong arm to go with it, just keep working on speed and first step.

Quick Hit
"Long limbs and has a good solid foundation to hold more weight. Slightly open stance with a good leg kick. Simple and able to repeat over and over. Gets barrel through the zone with constant line drives. Attacks the ball defensively and has very active footwork to work laterally around the ball to put him in position to field it. Strong arm with a hard throw to his target. Repeatable delivery and very simple, three pitch mix, and is able to keep same arm slot with his pitches."
