January 30, 2013
Today, we recap the top prospects from the Class of 2016 at the first Pre-Season Underclass Showcase in Dayton, Ohio at Sinclair Community College. We will recap the top players from the Classes of 2015-2017 as well as the best of the rest over the next two days.
These prospects have earned invitations to the Underclass Games in July at The Ohio State University. This invitation only event, which attracted over 50 scouts in 2012, will feature the top prospects from the Classes of 2015-2017 in the State of Ohio.
Brock Balderson, 1B/RHP, Marlington HS, Class of 2015
6-foot, 185-pound prospect with solid frame that offers two-way potential to schools. Right-handed bat has good power potential with solid stance and shoulder trigger. Has some loop in swing. Gets good lower body torque and two hand finish in swing (enhances pop). Ran 7.53 60-yard dash. Shows good fielding actions around the bag with solid arm strength. On the mound, he shows good delivery with quick arm speed through 3/4 slot. Fastball showed some life at 81-82 mph. Curve had some downward spin (66-70 mph); cut/slider had good bite (71-72 mph). Changeup showed feel and some arm side run (68-70 mph).
Roger Danison, IF/OF, Bloom-Carroll HS, Class of 2015
6-foot-1, 170-pound athletic player offered versatility in this showcase. Ran 7.24 60-yard dash. Likely projects as outfielder, but shows some potential as third baseman or offensive second baseman. Shows good lower body and hands in the infield. Needs to improve overall balance. His bat is his best tool. Lefty swinger that hits from upright stance and squares barrel on ball well from shoulder trigger. Hands are quick into zone with long finish with controlled upper cut path. Good lower half and swing finish. On the mound, shows raw skills with quick arm speed through upper 3/4 slot. Showed 77-79 mph on fastball. Curve had some downward tilt at 63-64 mph along with 71-73 mph change-up.
Tristan Epp, OF/LHP, Liberty Union HS, Class of 2015
5-foot-11, 170-pound outfield prospect with athletic frame. His bat is his best tool. Hits from upright stance with quick hands into zone. Squares barrel on the ball very well. Has power potential. Shows good lower body torque and hand swing finish. Shows easy projection, especially if he matures his hitting approach and speed (7.37 60-yard dash). Likely corner outfield type with good present arm strength for his age (80 mph).
Eric Terry, C, Summit Country Day, Class of 2015
5-foot-7, 160-pound catching prospect with small, solid frame. Hard working prospect that shows passion and high motor behind the plate. Good receiver with fluid footwork and lateral movement in blocking. Shows good arm strength but will need improvement in glove to hand exchange to enhance split time (2.12-2.15). Will also need to get physically stronger to increase durability. Shows true switch-hitting skills at the plate. Has always gone from bot sides. Showed better promise as a lefty with controlled upper cut from shoulder trigger. Good lower half torque and hand finish. From the right side, he showed a wider base. Needs to improve staying on his backside.
Adam McDonough, IF, Lakota East HS, Class of 2015
6-foot, 215-pound corner infield prospect with strong, physical build. Shows projection as a power first base type. Good balanced stance from the right side. Has good bat path from shoulder trigger with obvious strength. Has good lower body torque and two-hand power finish with hands. His foot speed and 8.36 60-yard time limits him defensively, but he does good job around bag with balance and 78 mph arm strength.
