INDIANAPOLIS – Thirty-two players with Indiana connections were selected in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, including 29 from the college ranks and three from Hoosier high schools.
The top pick with an Indiana tie was left-handed pitcher Zach Thompson of the University of Kentucky . Thompson, a Wapahani High School alumnus who lives in Selma, Ind., went to the St. Louis Cardinals with the 19th pick in the first round.
Kody Hoese of Tulane University was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 25th pick in the first round. Hoese is a power-hitting third baseman from Griffith (Ind.) High School.
The third first-round selection, right-hander Drey Jameson of Ball State University, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the No. 34 pick.
Ten of the drafted players came from Jeff Mercer’s Indiana University squad, this year’s Big Ten champions. DRAFT CHATTER:
The first two rounds of the draft took place Monday, June 3. Rounds 3-10 took place Tuesday, and rounds 11-40 were held Wednesday.
This marks the third time Bryan Hoeing has been drafted. He was the Diamondbacks’ 32nd-round pick in 2015. A year ago, the Giants selected him in the 36th round.
It was the second time around for Zach Thompson, an 11th-round choice by the Rays in 2016.
Also previously drafted was Kody Hoese, who was taken in the 35th round last year by the Royals as a draft-eligible sophomore.
Zach Thompson missed two months of the 2018 campaign due to an elbow injury. He recovered in time to play last fall for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The American collegians went up against squads from Chinese Taipei, Japan and Cuba. Thompson came back with a flourish this year, striking out nine or more batters in ten of his first 12 starts. He fanned 13 in Kentucky’s 5-0 home win over Georgia on March 29, permitting just two hits.
Kody Hoese delivered a Ruthian performance in Tulane’s 22-10 win over Lamar in New Orleans on February 20. Hoese had four hits in seven trips to the plate, pounding out three homers and knocking in four runs.
Drey Jameson, generously billed as six feet tall and 165 pounds, finished this year with 146 strikeouts – the third-highest in NCAA Division I play and a Mid-American Conference record. Baseball America likes his “lightning-quick arm with electric stuff.”
Taken by the Dodgers in round three, Ryan Pepiot is now the highest draft pick in Butler baseball history. Pepiot succeeds Pat Neshek, currently a Phillies reliever. Neshek was selected in the sixth round of the 2002 draft by the Twins. Earlier this year, Pepiot moved past Neshek as the Bulldogs’ all-time strikeout leader.
Matt Gorski. Pittsburgh’s second-round pick, was a baseball and soccer star at Hamilton Southeastern High School. The South Bend native says he completely revamped his swing this year under the tutelage of first-year coach Jeff Mercer.
John Baker combined with Lukas Jaksich to hold Ohio University hitless when Ball State beat the visiting Bobcats 5-0 on May 11. The no-hitter was the third in Ball Statehistory and the first-ever nine-inning no-no.
West Point junior Jacob Hurtubise compiled a .541 on-base percentage this year, second in NCAA Division I play to Adley Rutschman of Oregon State, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Scotty Bradley’s father is Scott Bradley, who caught for the Yankees (1984-1985), White Sox (1986), Mariners (1986-1992) and Reds (1992). The elder Bradley has been Princeton University’s baseball coach since 1998.
Bryan Hoeing’s cousin is right-hander Alex Meyer, who pitched for the Twins (2015-2016) and Angels (2016-2017) and is currently in extended spring training. Drafted by the Red Sox in 2008, Meyer opted to attend the University of Kentucky. The Nationals made him their first-round pick in 2011.
Reese Sharp and the University Trailblazers meet Tecumseh in the Class A semistate round at Jasper on Saturday (June 8). In 2018, University lost to Daleville 4-2 in nine innings in the championship game at Victory Field. Sharp transferred to University from Noblesville after his junior year.
Zach Thompson pitched Wapahani to the IHSAA 2A title in 2014, getting the win in the Raiders’ 2-0 triumph over Evansville Mater Dei at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
Avery Short played for the USA Team at the COPABE (Confederación Panamericana de Béisbol, or Pan-American Baseball Confederation) U-18 Pan-American Championship in Panama, Nov. 23-Dec. 2. The American squad won a fifth consecutive gold medal.
Tallest among the Class 2019 Draft Class is Bryan Hoeing at 6-foot, 6-inches. On the other end of the spectrum are Drew Campbell and Cole Barr, both listed as 5-11.
