Over the next few weeks in addition to highlighting the Top 10 Player Profiles of 2015, we will also highlight the Top 10 Stories in Wisconsin High School Baseball during 2015.
Gavin Lux of Indian Trail initially made his verbal commitment to Virginia Tech in November of 2013, but the NCAA coaching carousel would change that in March of 2015. After Virginia Tech recruiting coordinator Mike Kunigonis left for the head job at Northern Illinois, Lux began having second thoughts about his choice and eventually decommitted, as highlighted in the March 13th edition of The Buzz:
The biggest recruiting news this week comes out of Wisconsin with SS Gavin Lux (Indian Trail HS, WI) de-committing from Virginia Tech. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound junior is back on the market and has interest from some big programs including Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, UC Santa Barbara, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wichita State. Lux is currently working on setting up visits to some schools. He hopes to get to a few before the spring season starts and then will use the weekends during it. Lux has a projectable frame with quick actions, good footwork and hands on defense. At the plate, he has explosive bat speed with loose hands, a short path and sneaky pop to his pull side.
Many national powerhouse schools were on the slick fielding shortstop, whose recruiting remained open until after the WIAA season concluded. On June 15th Lux committed to Arizona State, making him the second player from the 2016 Wisconsin Class to commit to the Sun Devils. His commitment was again featured in the June 19th edition of The Buzz:
Arizona State made a splash in Wisconsin this week by getting verbal commitments from two 2016 prospects in the state’s top 10—No. 1 SS Gavin Lux (Indian Trail HS, WI) and No. 6 RHP Alec Marsh (Reagan College Prep, WI). Marsh has an athletic frame at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and has a repeatable delivery. He pounds the zone with three pitches, including a fastball that sits 90-92 mph. His curveball has hard, late break in the low 70s and he shows feel for a changeup. He should also get attention from the pro community.
Lux was committed to Virginia Tech, but put himself back on the market in March. He’ll certainly be getting hard looks from scouts this summer as he makes the tour around the major events. He has a long, athletic frame with smooth actions. He has quick hands at the plate and keeps the barrel in the zone, producing hard line drives.
