Taylor Lehnert Fires One Hitter for Sectional Crown
May 29, 2012
Monday evening's show down between Highland's Jordan Minch and Lake Central's Taylor Lehnert was sure to be exciting; however, one pitcher shined through to capture the Sectional 1 4A crown. Taylor Lehnert was ordinarily exceptional last night. While only giving up one hit, Lehnert pitched a complete game while striking out 9.
Highland's Minch wasn't half bad, giving up only two runs through the first 4 innings, and six total for the game. Minch came out early with some control problems. Giving a walk, followed by a strike out, Lake Central's Chase Fieldhouse hit a tape measure shot over the right center field fence, giving LC an early 2-0 lead. Chase has continually shown he can turn around any fastball in the northern part of the state. Minch did settle in but gave up some slap singles throughout 4 innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lake Central would put up a crooked number. With Ryan Burvan (2013) on second, followed by an intentional walk to Fieldhouse, Senior Austen Wagoner (2012) singled to left, scoring Burvan and making the game's score 3-0 at that time. While Fieldhouse and Wagoner were on base, Senior Ryan Pachowicz hit a towering 3-run Home Run over the left field fence to secure a 6-0 lead going into the to half of the sixth innng.
Lake Central would add one run in the bottom half of the 6th, making it 7-0 and the final score three outs later. The story was really Taylor Lehnhert from Lake Central. While his fastball elevated early, he pounded the strike out with an over-powering fastball and a sharp slider to cruise in victory. Lehnert struck out 9, and had five consecutive from the 5th to the 6th inning.
Lake Central will advance to the LaPorte regional, which is loaded with talent. It will be fun to see if Valpo and Lake Central can advance past their first round games to meet in the championship.
Surprising Player of the Day: I won't get into details, but how Chase Fieldhouse isn't a Division One signee at this moment, is far beyond my scope of work.
