TOS: Day 3 Notebook

CARY, NC—With threatening weather in the area, the third day of games at the Tournament of Stars was adjusted, as the last game got moved up to be played at 1 p.m. EST. Temperatures were cooler with the overcast skies, but weather messed with the schedule anyway as we endured a long delay in the afternoon because of lightning. All three games got in and the championship is set for Sunday with the Brave vs. Stripes at 12:30 p.m. EST. Stars will play Free for the bronze at 11:30 a.m. while United and Pride will battle for fifth place.

Technically, it was the fifth day of TOS, but it’s the third day of games. I’m now flying solo at the event so all of Saturday’s highlights are in one notebook…

+ RHP/IF Hunter Greene (Notre Dame HS, CA) has crushed the ball in two games this week, going 3-for-8 with two runs scored so far. However, he has excellent upside on the mound and made his first appearance on Saturday. He allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in three innings, striking out four. Greene, a 2017, pitches from a 3/4 slot with an up tempo delivery. He’s free and easy and sat 87-90 mph, touching 91-92, in his first inning of work. He dipped to the mid 80s in the second, but was still up to 87-88. He got occasional life to his fastball and showed good feel for a changeup at 76-77. He nearly escaped a jam with runners on second and third and one out in the first inning. He didn’t throw many strikes at first, but he wasn’t missing by much and the zone definitely seemed tight. He also mixed in a breaking ball at 72-74 with slurvy action.
