Super 60: Statistical Analysis

The 17th Annual Super 60 Pro Showcase took place on Sunday, Feb 3 at the Max-McCook Athletic & Exposition Center’s state-of-the-art 125,000 square-foot open turf facility in McCook, Ill. This invite-only event featured 67 of the top 2019 high school draft prospects in Prep Baseball Report's 45+ state coverage area (including Canada). The prospects participated in a pro-style workout in front of the PBR Staff along with over 115 professional scouts. Of the 45+ states covered by PBR nation-wide, 28 states, plus Ontario, were represented by at least one player. Today, we begin the event analysis with a stat story.

TOP 60 Yard dash TIMES
In Super 60 trending fashion, the outfielders claimed 5 of the top 6 spot in the 60-yard dash leaderboard. Top finisher Ethan Vecrumba (Edgewood, IN) was .04 ticks away from tying the Super 60 record set by Jack Schneider (KY) in 2017. Both showed uber athletic abilities in their game with present arm talent from the outfield grass. Schneider went on to get selected in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB draft by the New York Mets. Connor Beichler (Owasso, OK) and Jase Bowen (Central Catholic, OH) both crossed the finish line in sub 6.50 fashion at 6.38 and 6.47, respectively. Of the 42 total runners, 24 of them finished with a sub-7 60-yard dash finish (57%).

TOP FASTBALL VELOCITY
23 of the 29 pitchers in attendance (79%) had fastballs top 90 mph or better. Missouri State commit Mason Auer (Kickapoo, MO) showcased his electric arm speed by tying a Super-60 record hitting 96 mph on the gun. Not only did Thomas Wilhite finish a tick behind the leader at 95 mph, but he did so repeating downward tilt and angle at the bottom of the strike zone. Perhaps the arm that made the biggest splash was Joe Biancone (John-Jay - Cross River, NY) who tied for third with Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, MI) at 94 mph.

TOP EXIT VELOCITY
11 of 43 players who participated in the exit velocity testing hit 100 mph or better with a wood bat from a tee. Tommy Bensons' (IMG Academy, FL) 111 mph exit velocity crushed the prior Super 60 record set most recently by 2017 attendee Brad Czerniejewski (TCU commit by way of Lake Forest, IL). Mason Auer (Kickapoo, MO) finished near the top of another leaderboard tying the physical RHH Jason Hodges (Marist, IL) at 103 mph. Two more Illinois products fell in the middle of the board in Kendal Ewell (Marist, IL) and Matt McCormick (St. Laurence, IL) who both have positive and distinct hitting qualities to benefit them come draft time.

TOP INFIELD VELOCITY
Lone Star State prospect Couper Cornblum (Midway, TX) led the infield velocity leaderboards unleashing a throw that carried at 92 mph across the diamond. Benson, Nathan Baez (Ironwood Ridge, AZ), and Nolan Wosman (Palmyra, MO) were the other three players that eclipsed the 90+ mph velocity mark.

TOP OUTFIELD VELOCITY
This crop of outfielders really impressed with their outfield velocities as a whole. Chase Krogman (Lake St. Louis Liberty, MO) led the way topping 96 mph from the outfield turf. Jase Bowen (Central Catholic, OH) only added to his draft stock showing the ability to repeat throws in the mid to low 90s with present ease. Ewel enters his third leaderboard on the day, the most of any prospect in attendance.

TOP CATCHER POP TIMES
Mississippi recruit Hayden Dunhurst (Pearl River Central, MS) claimed the top spot slighting Indiana commit Brant Voth (Simi Valley, CA) due to a tighter range. Dunhurst repeated his clean, quick and easy transfers to release that gave him the best pop and range of all backstops. 6 of the 15 catchers eclipsed a 1.90 pop time or better.

TOP CATCHER VELOCITY
For the second time Super 60 history the catcher velocity record was tied. This year Aaron Dolney (Detroit Country Day, MI) tied last years top velocity from Jacob Campbell and previous top velocity from Justin O'Conner. 7 of the 15 catchers in attendance threw 84 mph or higher from the crouch.
