Vander Wal has room to fill out his 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame. Everything about his game is quick. He runs well, getting down the line in 4.01 seconds and turning in a 6.65-second 60. He has strong hands and wrists and gets his bat through the zone quickly. He gets online carry to his throws from the outfield with an easy arm action. He plays hard and has major league tutelage. His father, John Vander Wal, played 14 seasons with eight different teams, mostly with Rockies and Expos. He is now a pro scout with the Padres.
