Donovan was the first Illinois player in his class to announce a commitment, choosing Michigan as his sophomore year was starting. At the Black and Silver 2015 Event in September 2012, Donovan ran a 6.85-second 60-yard dash and showed a quick swing from the left side. He also is highly athletic with good defensive actions.

This spring, he showed he was one of the top offensive players in the state, even as a junior. He has excellent footwork, good hands and arm strength. His bat speed is coupled with a short path, which brings hard contact and pop. He also plays with great moxie and energy.
