Super 60 Player Preview: OF Lex Kaplan (Ladue HS)
January 24, 2013
Committed to the University of Miami, Lex Kaplan is a five tool player who has a legitimate change of being a draft pick, and we wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him plucked by a team looking for a top of the order outfielder.
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Kaplan has impressed us over the last few years with his athleticism and overall tools. Kaplan is a projectable prospect who has a balanced and quiet approach at the plate and a powerful left-handed swing that produces excellent backspin carry. He has shown the ability to handle different types of pitches in different parts of the strike zone, and hit it hard consistently.
In the outfield, Kaplan is quick to the ball with athletic footwork and the ability to field everything with his momentum toward his target, showing a plus arm (88 mph) with good carry and accuracy.
Kaplan has also seen his 60 time improve over the past few years, from a 7.17 two years ago to a 6.82 this past summer.
Last season he put up some lofty stats, hitting .488 with six doubles, seven triples, eight homers, 39 runs scored, 39 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. Currently ranked No. 4 in the Class of 2013, if he puts together a season last last season, he could make a run at the No. 1 ranking in Missouri by the end of the season.
