The Staunton River Golden Eagles got a solid pitching performance from Brock Porter at home, nipping the Jefferson Forest Cavaliers 4-3. Jefferson Forest won the first contest of the two game set with the identical score the previous weekend, yet the home team flipped on the script on the talented Cav's lineup.
Cav's leadoff batter wasted no time, singling to start the contest, and Charlie MacToman drilled a base hit of his own. DH Luke Fowler's one out single loaded the bases for the Cav's, bringing shortstop Griffen Wooldridge to the plate. Wooldridge would hit into a snappy 4-6-3 double as the large crowd roared in appreciation.
The Cav's ace was on the bump today, lefty Cody Whitten (Winthrop). Featuring a mid-eighties fastball, a sharp breaking ball and signature change-up, Whitten is one of the best pitchers in the area, however, it was not his day today.
Eagle's Matt Marrs struck out, yet a third strike passed ball found him on first base. A wild pitch to second batter Eddie Blake, advanced Marrs to second, and Koby Karnes ripped a single to centerfield, giving the Eagles with a one run lead. Karnes moved to second on another passed ball, and Nathan Cutler's opposite field single plated Karnes. Josh Thomas, Porter, and Keegan Tuck walked and scored Cutler. Thomas scored on a walk to give the Eagles a three run lead. Whitten went just two thirds on an inning.
In the second, Dakota Payne was hit by a pitched ball, stole second and advanced to third and Cutler knocked him in with a deep sacrifice fly, staking the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
In the third frame, the Cav's leadoff man, Zach Coates lined a single to left, MacToman walked, and DH Whitten lashed a line drive into the left centerfield gap, scoring both runners and pulling his team closer tied score.
Staunton River's Porter fought for four and two-third innings on the mound, handing the ball to Eddie Blake to close the win. Blake faced eight batters and allowed no hits, one strikeout, in two and one innings. Final score 4-3.
Jefferson Forest falls to 2-1 on the season and traveling to Pulaski County on 4/5/2017 at 5:00pm. Staunton River is also 2-1 and plays William Fleming on 3/28/2017 at home.
