Archbishop Spalding defeated Loyola Blakefield 8-2 in the conference opener for both teams in the MIAA A. Spalding struck first as they loaded the bases in the first inning off Loyola-Blakefield starter Carson Barnes, but were only able to scratch one across with an RBI single from Kris Burkowksi. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth from a Nick Benitez RBI groundout and a Justin Caesar RBI single.
Loyola was unable to solve Spalding's RHP Jordan Geber (Mt. St. Mary's), as they were held scoreless through four innings. The Don's finally were able to strike in the fifth when 2017 OF James Moses hit a two-run home run, cutting the Spalding lead to 3-2.
Spalding was able to break open the game in the sixth. The cavaliers scored five runs off three hits and two Loyola-Blakefield errors. The inning was highlighted by a Nick Vermillion two-run homerun to left field, making the score 8-2 and that was how the game ended.
Geber went six innings for Spalding, giving up two runs off two hits, struck out nine with only two walks. Caesar paced the Spalding offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Peter Godrick went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Cory Blohm had two hits and Vermillion went 1-for-1 with a homerun, two RBI, and two walks.
Moses led Loyola-Blakefield going 1-for-2 with a homerun and two RBI, Miguel Mateo was also 1-for-2.
