Southern WI Prospect ID: Outfield Analysis

In today’s breakdown of the Southern Wisconsin Prospect ID we break down the outfield group. Matt DeYoung (Xavier, 2016) is one of the more projectable prospects in his class, his long lean frame showcase strong tools across the board and will be exciting to follow as he polishes those skills. Kyle Schulz (Bradford, 2015) also had another strong performance as the Midwest Future Games participant displayed athleticism in all facets of his game.

A strong group across the board, we whittled it down to our top four outfielders from the showcase and here’s a look at how they shook out.

Top Outfielders

1. Matt DeYoung, OF/RHP, Xavier, 2016
Lanky frame, 6-foot-3, 190-pound left handed hitting two-way player, athletic build with projectability. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride. Athletic hands, short path with occasional extension, excellent bat speed, 89 mph exit velocity. Projectable high level hitter. Defensively showed quick footwork, 7.19 runner in the 60. Arm played at 84 mph from the outfield, loose arm action, high ¾ slot, showed accuracy and occasional carry. On the mound works from a ¾ slot, long arm action. Fastball has slight run, showed control, 78-80 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 67-69 mph. Changeup has fading action, thrown with fastball similar arm speed, showed feel and control, 66-70 mph.

2. Kyle Schulz, OF/LHP, Bradford, 2015
Athletic build, 5-foot-10, 150-pound two-way player. Offensively hits from the right side, open stance, short stride, heel lift trigger, great balance through contact. Athletic swing, shows bat speed, short path to the baseball, line drive type hitter. 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively plays through the baseball well, athletic action, natural outfield instincts, 7.01 runner. Traditional outfield arm action, long loose arm, over the top slot, showed accuracy and carry, 80 mph arm strength from the outfield. On the mound delivery is tall and fall, athletic delivery, slightly across his body. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, quick arm speed. Fastball is mostly straight, 76-78 mph, showed control of the zone. Curveball has 11/5 shape, showed feel for the pitch, 60-62 mph. Changeup flashed sinking action, showed control, 68-70 mph.

3. Joe Acker, OF/MIF, Marquette University, 2016
5-foot-11, 155-pound outfielder, athletic build. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, smooth loading action, short stride. Lower half works with solid balance. Excellent hands, advanced bat path, short to the baseball with extension, line drive gap to gap tendencies. 83 mph exit velocity from the tee, hard contact. Defensively uses an athletic crow hop in the outfield, plays through the baseball, feet work well. 7.18 runner in the 60. Arm action is long, over the top slot, accurate arm, 84 mph arm from the outfield. On the infield showed solid actions, similar arm action to that in the outfield, 72 mph across the infield.

4. Nate Anderson, OF, Mukwonago, 2015
6-foot-1, 170-pound left handed outfielder. Defensively played through the baseball with a clean exchange, showed quick footwork, 7.05 runner in the 60. Arm played at 83 mph from the outfield, long arm action, high ¾ slot. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, lower half works, solid balance through contact. Repeats swing well, contact hitter, some quick twitch, short path to the baseball. 79 mph exit velocity from the tee.

Teddy Endres, OF, James Madison, 2015
5-foot-11, 175-pound outfielder. Defensively showed arm strength from the outfield, long over the top arm action, showed carry, deliberate exchange. Arm played at 85 mph from the crow hop. Offensively hit from a slightly open stance, arm bar load, slight leg kick trigger. Low hands, slightly uphill path, 72 mph exit velocity from the tee.

Chris Mueller, OF/LHP, Homestead, 2014
Slender build, lanky frame, 6-foot-3, 160-pound left handed two-way player. Offensively this from a balanced stance, short stride, minimal lower half. Repeats swing, mostly upper body swing, flat path, line drive hitter. 71 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively uses a long high ¾ arm action from the outfield, 72 mph from the crow hop. 7.19 runner in the 60. On the mound arm action is long from a high ¾ slot. Fastball registered at 68-70 mph, occasional sink. Curveball is 58-64 mph. Changeup flashed sink, 63-67 mph.

Benny Serres, OF, Arrowhead, 2014
5-foot-8, 170-pound left handed hitting outfielder. Offensively hits from an open stance, short stride. Repeats swing well, uses mostly upper half, line drive hitter middle to opposite field approach, 73 mph exit velocity. Defensively uses a long arm action, high ¾ arm slot, some accuracy, 79 mph across the diamond. 7.5 runner in the 60.
