SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA-- The landscape of high school baseball across the country, in Covid times, is ever evolving with schedules both fluid and frustrating. Games are cancelled in an instant for precautionary measures, and players/coaches/fans have all quickly developed an intense ability to adapt and make the best of a difficult situation.

Even in the most trying of times, the baseball community continues to pick itself up.

You can always count on JSerra Catholic head coach, Brett Kay, to be at the top of the list when talking about people in the baseball community who continue to put the interest of the players ahead of themselves. Faced with plenty of obstacles and uncertainties, Kay hardly needed any more on his plate before putting together a quality tournament (across three levels nonetheless) to let the kids, who have scarcely been able to play in the state, compete in a pristine, well-spaced setting. The JSerra Classic brought together a plethora of talented programs and prospects, and served as kickoff to a new season while also attracting professional scouts who were also able to branch out to other sites and games.

So, kudos to Coach Kay and all those who helped put together such an outstanding event, and especially for continuing to give back to the game and help elevate the players involved.

Below, a selection of just some of the position players and big bats that stood out in a quick two day trip to Orange County:

Matthew Polk SS / OF / Orange Lutheran, CA / 2021

The Super 60 standout and speedster did not disappoint throughout the week, and got things started with a bang as he turned on a 90-plus fastball with two strikes for a home run over the left field wall. Listed at 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, Polk has some present lean strength throughout an athletic frame, and it shows with the eye-opening bat speed that he displays. A bit happy-footed and jumpy at the plate, the quick hands and bat speed make up for any pitch tracking difficulties, and the Vanderbilt recruit demonstrated an ability to get off quality swings with plate coverage that provided for firm contact to all fields. His energy level and will to succeed pushes his tools a notch higher, and there are present ball/glove skills with crisp routes in centerfield, though he also showcases the potential to play some infield if needed. The speed is clearly a weapon on the basepaths. Overall, a quality look at a prospect who could fit into the 4-6 round range, and who continues to perform in-game against quality competition.
