San Juan Capistrano, CALIF. - While the 2021 SoCal ProCase may have been the 1st PBR event attended by Uncommitted RHP Jack Smith, this is not the first time our staff have been able to see him. This past Spring, the rising senior pitched to a 1.75 ERA in 8 IP this for a loaded Huntington Beach HS squad. Look for him to play a large role on the Oilers pitching staff moving into the 2021 season.

Coming in at an imposing 6-4 205, the skillset has certainly started to grow into the frame as Smith now possesses a heater reaching the upper 80’s along with two secondary offerings in two different time windows to complement it. It is easy to like what is already there and even easier to dream on what could be when this kid reaches his physical and mechanical peak. Like so many others, these next few months will be a crucial time for his continued development.

THE REPORT

Body: 6-foot 4, 208 pounds. Large frame with long levers and a sturdy base. Built like a football player, can see some physicality within him. Room for further  physical development

Delivery: Clean, quiet and repeatable windup. Simple side step to start, high hand break with rhythm and in sync. Arm stroke is quick with some length to it and the deceleration pattern looks clean. Gets into his back hip well for size, with still some room to improve in the drive phase. Gets in and around the front hip with a strong lead leg block.

FB: Velocity Range: 85-87 Top 88; Averaged 1981 RPM, 9.9 Inches of Horizontal Movement, and 16.3 Inches of Induced Vertical break on his heater. Showed potential for plus movement peaking at 21.6 inches of IVB with an average extension of 6.57 feet. Will look for him to hone in on this as it will allow him to garner more swing and miss. Worked through some command issues with this pitch but overall showed well in his outing.

CB: Threw the curveball at 71-72 MPH with an average of 2293 RPM and peak of 2403 RPM. Slurvey shape with averages of 8.5 inches of drop and 7.9 inches of sweep. Serviceable offering that he showed the ability to get over for strikes. Keeps release height consistent with FB and tunnels well.

CH: Velocity range of 77-79 MPH. Does a nice job of killing spin with an average of 1769 RPM. Movement is unique in his arsenal, with average Horizontal Movement coming in at 14.4 inches and Induced Vertical Break at 13.5 inches. This pitch features more drop and arm side run than the fastball. Release height is consistent with other pitches.

Summary: This outing was somewhat of a coming out party for Smith as he looks to take the next step forward in the development process. With  the three pitch mix  he currently features, college coaches should be on this guy and will be as he continues to lock in the stuff that has shown flashes of being really, really good. As he continues to grow into the frame and gain body awareness, the velocity should start to creep up, which should have a positive effect on the secondaries as well. It doesn’t take more than the  naked eye to see the stuff is there and this will be an interesting follow heading into 2022.
