SoCal Birds Scout Day: Upperclass White AM - Pitchers
December 3, 2020
ORANGE, CALIF. - The SoCal Birds Scout Days kicked off with the upperclassmen on the first day of action. Close to 40 players were split into two groups for a showcase and live at-bats. The showcase featured a standard pro-style workout that included the 60-yard sprint, batting practice and defensive workouts at ones respective position. The scout day ended with a highly competitive simulated game.
Trackman, Blast Motion, radar guns, running sensors and a team of scouts were hard at work powering the event. You can find the SoCal Upperclass Birds Stats Leaders here.
SCOUTING REPORTS
PJ Wendler, Servite (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP Quality uncommitted pitcher with a projectable fastball.
Body: 6-1, 170-pounds.
Delivery: Balanced and repeatable, high front side, proportional lower half drive and upper half arm action.
Arm Action: RH. Arm works best when throwing the fastball, loose arm that is projectable, off-speed arm action development key.
FB: T90, 88-89 mph. Best pitch, carries well through the zone, 2441 spin rate (max) - 2240 spin rate (avg), good finish to pitch.
CB: 73-76 mph. Projectable pitch, 2485 spin rate (max) - 2360 spin rate (avg), finish in front.
CH: 75 mph. Developmental pitch used only once, 1369 spin rate, showed good arm-side-run.
Jack Tuttle, South (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-2, 200-pounds. Prototypical college pitchers build; proportional throughout, some strength and overall physical projection.
Delivery: Arm works freely but not insync with lower half, needs to land before throwing, weight back is key to balance.
Arm Action: RH. Arm shows life, lower half mechanical changes/enhancements could increase velocity now, more velo to come.
FB: T87, 84-86 mph. 0:15 Fastball Tilt, 2259 spin rate (max) - 2170 spin rate (avg), slightly below-average MLB spin rates show potential for more down the line.
CB: 70-75 mph. 8:00 Curveball Tilt, 2623 spin rate (max) - 2346 spin rate (avg), above MLB average curveball max spin rate projects very well and gives this pitch plus-potential.
Luke Wallin, Crean Lutheran (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-1, 190-pounds.
Delivery: Practices the trending "Clevinger" type mechanics; active actions, rockback and explode towards home plate, fast with pullback backside follow through.
Arm Action: RH. Mechanics create some accuracy issues, arm needs to keep up with explosive lower half, potential overall.
FB: T85, 82-84 mph. High induced vertical break, 1940 spin rate (max) - 1826 spin rate (avg) low for level, ride is key to pitch.
CB: 68-71 mph. Quality breaking ball with better command than fastball at times, 1839 spin rate (max) - 1767 spin rate (avg).
Cole Seward, Valencia (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-2, 220-pounds.
Delivery: Grab and go, mature feel, stays tight, throws strikes, balanced.
Arm Action: RH. Short arm swing, late pickup for hitters, fastball/curveball arm action consistent.
FB: T86, 83-86 mph. Located to both sides of the plate, velocity increase needed at next level, 2309 spin rate (max) - 2180 spin rate (avg) shows potential for overall gains.
CB: 74-78 mph. Showed good depth, out pitch, 2285 spin rate (max) - 2104 spin rate (avg).
Andrew Stanley, Pacifica (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/1B
Body: 6-5, 195-pounds.
Delivery: Solely out of the stretch and on the first base side of the rubber, some funk to his mechanics, point and shoot front side, tough matchup for RHH.
Arm Action: RH. Whippy arm action, arm action creates run and ride, more velocity to come.
FB: T83, 80-82 mph. 1:15 Tilt, 2334 spin rate (max) - 2145 spin rate (avg), high spin rates for velocity help play up the pitch and shows room for more down the line.
CB: 72-74 mph. 8:00 Tilt, 2237 spin rate (max) - 2182 spin rate (avg), average curveball that gives him another pitch to play with.
SL: 73-74 mph. 9:45 Tilt, 2354 spin rate (max) - 2178 spin rate (avg), swing and miss pitch.
CH: 74-78 mph. 1603 spin rate (max) - 1527 spin rate (avg), ideal spin differentials from fastball give this pitch a chance.
Wyatt Zadoorian, Beckman (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: LHP Soft tossing left-hander with command and movement.
Body: 6-0, 155-pounds.
Delivery: Body stays tight, hides the ball well, repeatable, works quickly, balanced.
Arm Action: LH. Short arm swing, creates funky spin, arm works well for multiple pitch ability.
FB: T74, 71-73 mph. Showed a 4-seam to the glove side and a 2-seam to the arm side, splitting the plate in two with two fastballs.
CB: 64-66 mph. Slow breaking curve that will get outs if located properly.
CH: 66-68 mph. Batting practice fastball with some fade that plays off other pitches well if located properly.
