So you say you would like to play college baseball? There are a whole lot of colleges who offer a student the opportunity to continue playing baseball; 1,539 schools to be exact. If you do the math, most colleges carry a 30 man roster for baseball so that's 46,170 roster spots.

Every player initially dreams of playing Division I, but only 8,850 players are going to do so in a given year. Of the 1,539 colleges who support collegiate baseball, 295 (20%) are at the Division I level.

These numbers are probably not that alarming or eye popping to the average high school player who is beginning his college search. But what might surprise many is where the states that have the greatest number of colleges with baseball teams are located. Many would guess the warmer, year round baseball states such as Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. Not even close.

The state that has the most colleges who carry a baseball team is New York with 111 schools. Close behind in second place is Pennsylvania at 103.

Of the six states in which Prep Baseball Report operates (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania), there are 360 schools total that carry baseball teams. Carrying on with our math lesson, that equates to roughly 25% of all colleges who offer baseball residing in states where PBR operates.

So if we go back to the original question the answer should be quite obvious. If you reside in a state where PBR operates and you would like to play at the next level, make sure you attend a PBR event and let the PBR staff go to work for you. Make sure that any school you may have an interest in is aware that you have been to a PBR event and that your evaluation and video from that event is available at the PBR website. And finally, don't hesitate to let the coach know that they are welcome to contact a PBR scout for an honest evaluation of your abilities.
