With the calendar firmly in the month of May and the playoffs looming in the windshield, we wanted to expand beyond our Power 25. The Power 25 is our ranking of the best teams in Virginia and DC, and it has a tendency to favor big schools that have a deeper talent pool. With that in mind we wanted to launch what will call our Small School 10 rankings. These rankings will recognize the top schools in VISAA III and VHSL 2A and 1A and they will be updated weekly for the rest of the season, just like the Power 25.
Opening up in the top spot is Chatham. The Cavaliers are still unbeaten this spring and are averaging ten runs a game. They haven't just beaten up on other small schools all spring as the Cavaliers have swept two games from 4A Bassett and beaten 4A George Washington and 3A Tunstall as well.
At No. 2 is the top private school in the Small School 10, Walsingham Academy. The Trojans have played a tough schedule and have wins over Division II schools Atlantic Shores and Steward so far this spring.
At No. 3 is Eastside, the Trojans only have one loss to a Virginia opponent, falling early in the season to Gate City, only to beat them in a later matchup. Opening at No. 4 is Fuqua, which has a ton of talent and has played some really good big school opponents close this spring. At No. 5 is Virginia, which might hold the best win of any of these schools, having beaten 3A State Championship favorite Abingdon in April.
Enough talk, lets look at the first Small School 10 of 2018.
