Hilton 5 Brockport 4 |
Section Five continued its penchant for dramatic Game of the Week finishes. Brent Turpyn plated Manhattan commit Dominic Palma with a one-out walk-off single as the Hilton Cadets rallied to beat the Brockport Blue Devils, 5-4 in Monroe County League action. The 6-2 Turpyn dug out a full-count curve ball and sent a sinking line drive into center field for the game-winner.
No Retreat, No Surrender
Hilton starter, John Chiappone, wasn't spectacular, but the left-hander didn't give in. Facing a lineup which has tallied double figures eight times this season, including a six-game stretch when the Blue Devils averaged 11.8 runs a game, Chiappone picked his spots to challenge hitters. The southpaw tossed just one clean inning and stranded two runners each in the fourth and fifth frames. He left in the sixth trailing 3-2 having allowed just four hits.
Howling Wolf
Hilton reliever, Brian Wolf, entered the game with two on, one out, and the top of the Brockport batting order coming to the plate. After surrendering an RBI double to the first batter he faced, the senior right-hander retired five of the next six getting punch outs to end the sixth and another to close the seventh.
Flashing the Leather
The contest brought together two of Section Five's finer shortstops in Brockport's Michael Jamele and Hilton's David Stirpe. Jamele made a handful of routine plays, but the junior shortstop displayed his arm in the fourth inning when he ranged to his right to field a ground ball in the hole at third and make an off-balance throw across the diamond to get the runner. Stirpe made a diving catch in shallow center to take away a hit. The pair also got it done at the plate. Stirpe put Hilton on the scoreboard in the fifth. The sophomore turned on a change up and drove in two with a double to left. Jamele showed his ability to adjust at the dish going opposite on a two-strike curve ball for an RBI double.
Narrowest of Margins
Last time these divisional rivals met, Brockport walked off with a 13-12 win in eight innings. The Cadets have lost four one-run contests on the season including that setback. Hilton tied the score in the sixth. Jack Annable led off with what appeared to be a routine ground out. That is until the pearl hit the dirt and took a sharp right turn. Annable scored four batters later when Justin Resseguie's Baltimore chop glanced off the outstretched glove of Brockport reliever Joshua Keenan for a hit. Michael Murphy tied the score when he scampered home from third on an errant pick off attempt at first.
Previous Game of the Week Results
The Penfield Patriots scored five in their final at bat to beat Greece Athena, 6-2 in nine innings on April 18th. One week later, Athena tallied twice in the bottom of the seventh only to lose 5-3 to Fairport in eight innings.
