Scouting Team Pennsylvania: The Catchers
June 21, 2012
The roster for Team Pennsylvania will carry three catchers with each likely to start a game and see considerable action.
Aaron Fritz is 5-foot-9 and 190-pounds. Fritz plays his summer baseball for the Evoshield Canes Mid Atlantic. The Minersville HS prospect is a polished receiver with a plus arm. He is also a solid offensive player who will likely contribute in the middle of the Team Pennsylvania lineup.
Christian Porterfield is a 5-foot-11, 195-pound catcher who plays his summer baseball for the Astro Falcons in the Youngstown, OH Class B League. Porterfield was named the Region Player of the Year this past spring where he did his catching for Region Champion, West Middlesex High School. Porterfield is a well rounded catcher with good receiving skills and a strong throwing arm. He is a talented hitter with the potential to be a middle of the order hitter at the next level.
Deon Stafford Jr. is a 5-foot-11, 200-pound catcher from Lower Dauphin High School. Stafford Jr. was recently rated as the top prospect at the PBR Eastern PA Top Prospect Showcase in Palmyra. He showcased a solid 7.3 60 yard dash time for a catcher on a slow track. His 83 mph bat exit speed velocity was the 2nd best at the event. He topped out at 79 mph on throws during the catching evaluation and he displayed a solid set up behind the plate. Offensively Stafford Jr. squared balls up consistently, driving pitches to both gaps. His potential to be a power hitter at the next level was evident.
Tomorrow we will take a look at the outfielders who will appear in a Team Pennsylvania uniform.
