Saturday Tournament Roundup
May 13, 2012
Here is a quick roundup of Saturday's tournament action around the state.
Zeeland East Tournament
Forrest Hills Northern won the Zeeland East Baseball Tournament beating both Comstock Park and Zeeland. Game one was a close one with a 3-2 final. Game two saw Forrest Hills Northern pound out 12 hits winning 14-4.
Best of the Best Invitational
No. 1 Gull Lake played two tough opponents Saturday. First up was reigning Division Two state champs St. Claire and current No. 6 team in the state. They won a grinding fashion with a final tally of 5-4. Next up is current No. 2 team in Division Two, Grand Rapids Christian. But Gull Lake proved why they are the current No. 1 team winning 10-4.
Lakeview Invitational
Montague took the Lakeview Invitational beating Belding and Mason County Central handily. However, Mason County Central's Payton Tybdall struck out 11 in a complete game effort.
Columbia Tournament
Sturgis continues its winning ways after previously beating Gull Lake. Playing at Sienna Heights, Sturgis beat Brooklyn Columbia Central 5-4 in the championship.
Panther Classic
Saginaw Nouvel had quite a day on the mound. Nouvel's Drew Kind threw a no hitter in game one and teamate Josh Buchalski threw a one hitter in game two. It definitely helps when your pitchers strike out twenty-four hitters on the day.
Buckley Wooden Bat Classic
Shelby improved its record on the year to 15-6 with its two wins on Saturday. They beat Evart and Buckley with solid pitching performances from Spencer Peters and Kody Plummer.
Addison Tournament
Pitching seemed to be a theme on Saturday and Jonesville followed suit only surrendering three hits on the day. They beat Dearborn Heights Annapolis and Addison.
Mickey Stanley Baseball Tournament
In a difficult year for Muskegon, a bright spot was had on Saturday as they won the Mickey Stanley Baseball Tournament. Now 4-16 on the year they beat Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills in the championship and Grand Rapids Creston in game one.
EK Invitational
Mattawan, who is having a great year, beat host East Kentwood 5-0 behind strong pitching from Austin Collison. Other top performers for Mattawan included B.J. Butler and Trevor Fink who both went 2-4 at the plate.
