2023 Spring Team Preview: Salisbury

SALISBURY, Ct. - With five college commits back from a year ago, chances are high for another title at Salisbury, the defending Western New England Prep Baseball League champions which have won the Young Division every year since 2017.

“This year we are a little young and slightly inexperienced playing together,” pointed out seventh-year head coach Kevin Huber, who carries a 66-22 record into the season. “Pitching and defense will be the keys. We need to catch the ball well.”

Thomas Galusha, Sach Ramos, Phil Trojanowski, Rowan Schneider and Jasper Nadel bring promise to the upcoming season as players that have made commitments to the next level. Galusha, the seventh-rated senior right-handed pitcher in New England, is a UConn commit while Sach Ramos, the top-ranked 2023 catcher in Connecticut who will also see time on the mound, is signed with Michigan. Senior Rowan Scheider, a first baseman, is a Washington commit while classmate Phil Trojanowski is a RHP/3B signed with Illinois Tech.

Junior Jasper Nadel, a right-handed pitcher and outfielder committed to George Washington, rounds out the returnees that are committed.

If that isn’t enough, the Crimson Knights have six more commits that are newcomers to the team, including five seniors. Jack Killelea, Brady Bendik and Timmy Virtudes are all recruits of the Naval Academy, Luke Marino is signed with Army and Adam Bauks is headed to Salve Regina. Killelea is the fifth-rated 2023 catcher in New England, Bendik a RHP/3B and Virtudes a left-handed pitcher. Marino is also a senior lefty while Bauks is a 2023 righty.

Highly-touted Quincy Bright brings hope for the present and future, with the top freshman in New England a Mississippi State commit. The 6-1 170-pounder is the third-ranked 2026 left-handed pitcher in the nation.

Additionally, juniors Mick Graham and Pierce Cowles along with freshman Nasir Stevenson are others that Huber is looking at to make contributions this year. Graham is an outfielder/SS and Stevenson and OF/RHP while Cowles is the 18th-ranked 2024 shortstop in New England.

“We have quality work habits and do well in the classroom,” Huber explained. “Our student-athletes are excellent citizens and well respected in our school community.”

But there are numerous losses that must be replaced from the 2022 team including Hayden Miller (College of Charleston), Jake Brink (College of Charleston), Emmett Coco (Wagner), Anthony Torreso (Davidson), Sam Benedict (Christopher Newport), Jake Benedict (Christopher Newport), Jacob Risedorf (Southern New Hampshire) and Liam Chamberlain (UConn Avery Point).

As for continuing its impressive play in the league, Huber sees a lot of challenges.

“Every team in our league has gotten better,” Huber concluded. “There are many more student-athletes exploring prep schools. Each team has multiple college baseball players that should make for an exciting spring.”
