KATY, TX - You would be hard pressed to find a better pitching match-up in the state of Texas! 2018 RHP Jared Mack (Ridge Point) versus 2019 RHP Matt Thompson (Cy Ranch). These two guys competed as if it was the last game of their young careers. Jared Mack, Lamar recruit, was able to make big pitches with men on base over and over to keep his team close. Mack was able to surrender only 2 runs through 4 innings. Mack was able to pound the zone with a fastball that reached speeds of 88-91 and his hardest pitch of the night was 94 mph. Cy Ranch had the bases loaded in the 1st, 2nd and 4th innings. The Mustangs sent to the plate a line-up that featured 5 left-handed hitters. The offensive star of the night for Cy Ranch was senior 2 hole hitter Nick Cisneros who went 3-4. Cy Ranch was in control of a close game, because of their star sophomore phenom Matt Thompson.Thompson, a Texas A&M recruit, featured a Fastball that he controlled in the 87-91 mph range and touched 93. He pitched off his fastball the first time through the order. It was in the 3rd inning that he unleashed a wipe-out Slider that was 80-83 mph. Thompson used his devastating breaking pitch to strikeout 9 of the next 14 hitters, including a perfect 4th inning where he struck out the side. Dominant doesn't begin to explain the way Thompson pitched for 6 innings. The Panthers scored a run on a Double from 3 hole hitter Michael Cooper (McLennan Commit) in the top of the 3rd. Mack would battle his way through 4 1/3 innings until he reached his pitch count.
It was the top of the 7th inning where the game turned. Ridge Point entered the 7th inning down 3-1 on the scoreboard. Junior shortstop Zach Johnson had the best at bat of the game when he singled to lead-off the inning and knocked starting pitcher Matt Thompson from the game. Gabe Colianni (Sophomore) would follow with a run scoring single, and the rally had begun. The panthers best chance to tie the game was to turn the line-up over and get back to Ronald Washington (San Jac Commit). With runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs Washington delivered a clutch single when he rolled the ball through the 6 hole to tie the game at 3. The game tied and the visiting crowd on their feet, senior second baseman Parker Wayne crushed a bases clearing Double off the wall in left. Ridge Point had their first lead of the game 5-3. Relief pitch Matthew Scott (Junior) would mix and match his off-speed pitches for 2 2/3 innings only giving up 2 runs, Cy Ranch would score a run in the bottom of the 7th. Ridge Point had completed the comeback and extended their season to a deciding Game 3 @ 1:00 on Saturday. What a great game played by two deserving programs! FB Ridge Point 5, Cy Ranch 4
Ridge Point went on to win Game 2 by a score of 8-3 and they advance to the 4th round of the Texas High School Baseball Playoffs.
