A beautiful Saturday morning saw WT Woodson and Hayfield meet in their Region 6C Quarterfinal game, which had been scheduled for Friday night, but was postponed due to the rain. The game was also moved to the turf at Justice High School on Saturday, but Hayfield would be the home team in it. Both teams started juniors, with Woodson going with righthander Ben Smallwood and Hayfield going with lefty Jacob O'Quinn.
The game was scoreless through 2, but Woodson was able to take advantage of a few errors to score the game's first run in the top of the third. Hayfield took advantage of the field change in the bottom of the third as senior shortstop Sucre Guzman (Chesapeake CC) doubled off the net in right to open the inning. After he scored the Hawks' first run, Eric Powell also drilled a ball off the net for an RBI single and a 2-1 Hayfield lead.
Woodson responded by loading the bases in the top of the fourth, and the Cavaliers were able to draw a pair of full count walks to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead, but they were unable to get the big hit needed to open the game up. Hayfield responded in the bottom half of the inning and the game exited the fourth in a 3-3 tie.
It stayed that way until the top of the sixth, when Woodson was able to strike it big. Dillon Brody led the inning off with a single and Smallwood laced his second double of the game, scoring Brody from first. The Cavaliers would add two more runs in the inning, with Ethan Conklin also driving in a run with a single to center.
Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Hayfield fought back, Hawks senior Ryan Banya doubled down the leftfield line with two outs to drive in a run and pick up his third hit of the game. Hayfield would get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Smallwood was able to finish it out for the complete game victory. Woodson will advance to Tuesday's Regional Semifinals against West Springfield.
