Recruiting news from around Illinois:
Ryan Scarpetta, a 6-foot-3 RHP from Rock Valley JC, has verbally committed to St. Joseph’s College. Scarpetta earned PBR All-State honors in 2010 as a RHP/1B at Rockton Hononegah HS. He is one of the more coveted Illinois junior college prospects for the MLB draft this June.
Josiah Carlson, an athletic 6-foot-4 RHP from Glenbrook South HS, has committed to North Park University. Carlson was a standout performer at the Fall Prospect Program last fall and helped lead the Titans to a Central Suburban South title last year.
Joey Coonrod, a 6-foot RHP/INF from Carrollton HS, has committed to Kaskaskia College. Coonrod teamed up with his brother, Sammy (now at Southern Illinois), to lead the Hawks to the Class 1A state championship, the school’s first. The right-hander earned the victory in the championship game, improving his record to 10-0. He finished with a 1.28 ERA, and in 67 innings, he notched 115 strikeouts to 14 walks. Offensively, the left-handed hitter batted .527 with 8 doubles, 4 homers and 26 RBI.
Kyle Kozak, a catcher from Marmion HS, has committed to play at Washington University in St. Louis.
Keith Askins, a 2B/OF from Macon Meridian HS, has committed to Illinois Central College. As a junior, Askins hit .337 with 2 home runs, 25 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
Dom Winiecki, a catcher from Crystal Lake South HS, has committed to McHenry County College. As a junior, he batted .381 with a .484 on-base percentage. He drove in a team-high 24 runs from the leadoff spot and had four homers, 12 stolen bases and scored 28 runs.
