Get to know prospect Cayman Richardson...
PBR: Tell us where you grew up, when did you start playing baseball, and who were your baseball influences and why?
Richardson: I was born and raised in Mechanicsville, VA. I started playing baseball when I was 4 years old (playing up with 5-6 year olds). My two main influences for starting to play baseball were my dad and my uncle. My dad was a two-sport athlete (basketball, football) and my uncle coached at a local little league.
PBR: You have been receiving a lot of notoriety lately. How does it feel?
Richardson: It feels great honestly. I always look back to when I was younger and how I dream about what it would feel like to be in the spot I'm in today, and now I'm actually in this spot.
PBR: You are committed to the University of Virginia. Tell us who were in your top three, your best offers, and why you chose the school you did?
Richardson: My original top three before even starting to talk to colleges were UNC, UVA, and Virginia Tech. My top three offers were UVA, Virginia Tech, and the University of Richmond. I chose the University of Virginia because when I was considering options I couldn't think of a better option. The University of Virginia has awesome academics and athletics, a beautiful campus, and the overall atmosphere of the campus. From a baseball standpoint, the prestigious and success of the baseball program.
PBR: You’re ranked in Virginia and Nationally by Prep Baseball Report VA/DC (PBR). How does that feel considering the size and talent in the state?
Richardson: It's an honor especially considering all the talented baseball players, not only in the Mechanicsville area, but the entire state.
PBR: What's your training look like this winter?
Richardson: This winter we have workouts for high school baseball (Hanover) on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons after school. On the days that we don't have that, I lift at Total Training Inc. in Henrico, VA.
PBR: How was your high school season last year? Team record? Post season awards? Stats?
Richardson: Last year we won the 4A State Championship. Our record was 21-2 overall. I received First Team All-Conference Award and Second Team All-Region Award at Shortstop.
PBR: Preview your high school season? How will your team be this year? Expectations?
Richardson: I think this year’s season will be a good one. Our biggest problem will be getting runs across. I think if we can scratch runs across, we can rely on our pitching and defense which will be our strongest assets this year. Our expectation for this year is winning another State Championship. Our coach said this the other day and practice and I completely agree with not "defending" our back to back state titles, but attacking the teams trying to deny us on our journey to make it a back to back to back state titles. But our overall goal right now is to win the first pitch of the first inning of the first game.
PBR: How are your academics? GPA? ACT? SAT? Any academic awards?
Richardson: My semester GPA is a 4.0. I was on the All-Academic team my freshman and sophomore years.
PBR: Who is the best player you will see this spring? Best team?
Richardson: The best player I will see this spring is probably my former cardinals teammate, and soon to be Cavalier teammate, Chesdin Harrington. The best team will probably be Millbrook. (If we play them in the playoffs)
PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
Richardson: Either the our back to back state titles or winning the WWBA Perfect Game Championship.
PBR: Tell us something about yourself others don't know but would like to know.
Richardson: I have an addiction to mac and cheese.
