Shortstops Set The Tone

The day began with a steady stream of physical bats providing barrel after barrel, but it was the turn to the infielders on each side of the dueling fields that delivered the thump that the many college coaches in attendance were there to see. SS Cade Miles (AL) and SS Carter Johnson (AL) enticed all onlookers with fluid strokes that promised plenty of upside. Miles, looking more physical than in a previous early spring look, peppered both gaps with an easy stroke before giving way to Johnson, who promised electric upside for those locked in from the stands. Both players’ hands worked freely through fluid loads before delivering heavy barrels through the zone. Johnson, in particular, was able to create impressive quickness in a short window. He should have a chance to explode this week. Meanwhile, the Northeast was also showcasing a strong contingent of middle infielders. SS Jamie Zee Jr. (NJ) had tunnel vision in a meticulous round that showcased his quick hands and ability to drive the ball from gap-to-gap while also hitting a home run to his pull side. SS Henry Jackson (NY) also flashed upside at the plate from the right side with fast hands and a projectable frame.

And the day only got better from there…

As each player tried to one-up the previous one, coaches scribbled away at notes for which players to follow entering game play. Below, a list of 20 names that I will be circling back to follow on Day 2 (not included in the rest of the article)

First Review

Running it back on Day 2, and eager to circle back for a more thorough look, here are the teams that I will be glued to on the second day for game action:

Kentucky

Hitter after hitter found barrel after barrel, and each seemed to blend into the last. Because of that, I’ll be getting another look at a talented KY squad that will also run out some high spin arms.

Indiana

The buzz was real throughout the Lakepoint facility as Team Indiana went through the workout. With OF Jayce Lee (IN) leading the charge, the Hoosier State’s finest uncommitted underclassmen will have nearly every eye in the facility locked in for the Game 1 matchup with host state Georgia under the lights. Lee burst onto the scene early in the summer thanks to the five-tool potential that his skill set presents, and he utilized the big stage at the Future Games to announce himself on the national scene. And with plenty more players to follow closely, Indiana has clearly been circled as a must-watch throughout the event.

California

The action came fast and furious throughout as hundreds of uncommitted players were put through an efficient showcase process. The boys from the West Coast came ready to show out, and I made sure to be locked in on the defensive portion of the ever-coveted “California shortstop”. They exceeded even my lofty expectations, thanks to a crisp batting practice session from the entire roster and a flawless defensive showing that was likely unmatched by any other complete roster. 2026 SS James Tronstein (CA), 2024 SS Jake Downing (CA), and 2025 SS Billy Carlson (CA) have quickly emerged as must-follow guys for me this week.
