The Washington Unsigned Senior Showcase took place on Tuesday, Aug. 27th at Bellevue College. The event featured only uncommitted players in the 2020 graduating class. Below are some of the notable performances from the day
position players
‘20 SS Will Baker (Skyline)
Lean, athletic frame with quickness to his actions. Moves well laterally while staying light on his feet and maintaining body control at SS. Uses a controlled, athletic leg kick in the box to create some sneaky pop from his 5-foot-9, 145 pound build.
‘20 C/3B Rhett Stein (Auburn)
Showed off a diverse skill set and posted impressive results with all of his measurables. Offers an intriguing combination of speed, arm strength and bat speed. Catch and throw actions should allow him to stick behind the plate. Stays tall in the box with easy effort to his swing. Flashed best contact to the middle of the field.
‘20 OF/RHP Daniel Charron (Chiawana)
2-way prospect who can impact the game in multiple ways. Showed a consistent, contact approaching during BP, spraying line-drives from gap-to-gap. Speed and arm strength profile well to corner OF. On the bump showed a repeatable delivery with the ability to throw multiple offerings for strikes.
1B Harrison Clark (Mt. Si)
One of the most potent bats that remain uncommitted in the 2020 class. Clark has the bat speed and swing path to do some damage when he connects. Set the high mark at the event with a 96 mph exit velocity off the tee. Plenty of athleticism to stick at 1B. Moves well around the bag with enough arm strength to make all the necessary throws.
C/3B Ryne Hays (Seattle Prep)
Physically built at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. Hays could develop into an offensive-minded catcher or transition to a corner INF/OF spot down the road. Wherever he ends up at the next level, the bat should keep him in the line-up. Starts in a relaxed, simple set-up with feet square to pitcher. Hitting actions show consistent rhythm and he produces low-effort bat speed with lift in his swing.
OF Andrew Hollomon (Bishop Blanchet)
Tall frame with a build that projects to get stronger. Missed some time this summer with injury but came out strong and posted quality measurables across the board. Combination of size, speed, arm and bat speed fits well in corner OF. Showed the ability to consistently find barrel in BP. Hits against a firm front side and stays tall thru contact, creating considerable leverage.
OF/LHP Luke Rohleder (Skyline)
Fastest player at the event and in the entire state. Posted a 6.78 and 6.75 on a grass track. Clean arm action from the OF with high ¾ release. Throws stay true and are consistently on target. Has the ability to develop more power as he gets stronger but the swing will always be more of a line-drive stroke. Keeps hands inside of the ball while keeping barrel tight to the body. Understands his strengths and doesn’t try to do too much in the box.
OF/INF Riley Oswald (Tahoma)
Has a strong, compact build to his frame at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds. Flashed the best arm strength on the day from both the OF and INF. Possesses the defensive versatility to move around the diamond. At the plate, hits from a very quiet, upright stance while putting a controlled, forward move on the ball. Swing path gets on plane early and allows him to produce gap-to-gap type power.
pitchers
RHP/1B Nate Wenzel (Mercer Island)
Continues to show the ability to locate in the bottom of the zone with his entire repertoire of pitches. FB showed a bit more velo than what we saw earlier this summer, up to 83 on the day and mostly 81-82 throughout. CH and CB remain consistent offerings. Still projects to add more size to his 6-5 frame and could grow into more velocity.
RHP/C Luke Wenzel (Mercer Island)
First look at Luke on the bump was a good one as he set the top velo mark on the day with a FB at 84 mph. Long, fluid arm path with a high ¾ release point. FB sat mostly 81-83 and paired with 11/5 CB at 67-71 and an occasional split-CH at 75-76. Don’t be surprised if there’s more zip on the FB when we get to the spring.
LHP Connor Blackburn (Juanita)
Lean, athletic build with a muscular frame. Missed a good chunk of time in the spring but looks to be on track to come back and be a formidable left-handed arm in 2020. FB sat 80-81 with heavy life in the bottom of the zone. Breaking ball has the chance to be above average with some more refinement. Also mixed in developing CH.
RHP Josh Ruffner (Skyline)
Ruffner displayed an old-school and rhythmic style of delivery with a polished feel for his 3-pitch-mix. FB gets downhill from high ¾ release at 79-81. Also has the ability to mix in 2 varieties of breaking balls. CB at 68-69 and a slider with tighter shape at 74-75. Throws with repeatable effort.
