Questions Every Recruit Should Be Asking About Proposed Recruiting Changes

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The beginning of each new year brings one of the more exciting events for coaches from across the country.  This year over 6,000 coaches from the professional ranks, down to the youth level converged on Dallas, TX for the annual American Baseball Coaches Association convention.

The convention offers an opportunity for college coaches to get together as a group and discuss potential legislation from the NCAA and rule changes the coaches may want to see adopted or changed.  In this forum, coaches can convene in small groups and as one big group to talk about the college game and what may be best for the sport going forward.  As you can imagine, there are a lot of different thoughts and personalities in the room and that can make the conversations interesting.

At this year’s convention, PBR and our partners at D1Baseball.com were in attendance, meeting with coaches from across the country and getting a feel for where the sport may grow in the coming years.  As part of their coverage at D1Baseball.com, Aaron Fit covered potential rule changes coming to recruiting from the NCAA as well as possible thoughts and new legislation coaches from across the country may want to see introduced.  You can see D1Baseball’s coverage in the links below:

ABCA Recap: Early Recruiting Talk

As we look back at the ABCA convention, we will take a little different perspective… How can this news help a prospect in his decision making process?  We will take a quick look at several of the proposed changes.  The incoming student athletes do not have much say on the proposals, so we will not focus on what is good and what is bad… plus my opinion is just that, an opinion, and in different areas of the country, programs and coaches may have a different feel.  The incoming and future student-athletes can learn about prospective programs, and how their athletic department thinks.  Below we will go through several of the proposals and some ideas athletes and their families can use to spark dialogue and lean more about programs they are talking with in the process.

Proposal: 3rd Paid Assistant Coach

At the Division 1 level, coaching staffs have limitation based on NCAA rules.  Schools can employ a head coach and two assistant coaches.
