Q&A with Houston Commit Gabriel Flores
January 6, 2022
TEXAS - As we wait for the high school season to get underway, PBR Texas is going to be doing Q&A's with some of the top players in the State. We will be discussing their recruiting process and their upcoming High School Season.
Today we spotlight 2022 Houston Commit Gabriel Flores out of Longview. The RHP/OF has had quite the career so far, and we talk to him about the recruiting process and his Longview Lobos goals for this upcoming season.
OUR Q&A
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Flores: I honestly had no expectations walking into my recruiting process. I was looking for a school that developed great players in my position and developed players with my style of play.
P: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
F: Distance played a huge role in my decision. I never wanted to venture too far from home. I want to be able to see my family in the stands as much as I can.
P: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
F: Recruitment really started to heat up around my sophmore year and the school that I am committed to first seen me play when I played at their campus.
P: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
F: Family. I love the brotherhood between the coaches and the players. They’re close and have each other’s back over anything. Some of the key factors in my decision were the facilities that they invested in to help their players develop and the constant success of the program.
P: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
F: Arizona state, Louisiana Tech, and Texas state were some of the offers on my list.
P: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
F: One of the best players that I’ve faced in my state is JD Thompson. He comes at you with all he’s got and isn’t afraid to force contact. He wants you to show him you can beat him.
P: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
F: When recruitment started to pick up I quickly realized that college coaches seen a level of potential in me that I had to believe was there myself.
P: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
F: Don’t rush, you have time. Be the best player that YOU can be. Understand and fill your own role. Be the best teammate in the dugout and the best leader on the field. Hold yourself as accountable as you hold your teammates.
P: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
F: Pitching under the lights in a Big League stadium.
P: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
F: We are winners. We’re going to win more games then we won last year. And I think this team will break all of our school records.
