Q&A with Creighton Commit Owen Richter of Creighton Prep

Prep Baseball Report Nebraska

Scouting Report

Richter shows the ability to be one of the top catchers, not just in Nebraska, but continues to gain steam as a prospect across the midwest. Above avg. defender with good blocking, above average receiving, and strong arm posting consistent 2.0 or better game pops with online carry and accuracy to bag. Even though his strength is behind the plate; Richter  has strong potential at the plate to be productive at the next level.  A squared stance, short stride, hands stay inside the ball.compact swing with some pop to both gaps

PBR: Why did you choose Creighton?

It just felt right academically and from a baseball standpoint.  I really like Coach Servais’ commitment to academics and Coach Wallace did a great job promoting the university and their program.  I am excited to play for such a great program in front of my hometown.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

 University of Minnesota

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

They first saw me at one of their prospect events a couple years ago.  The relationship continued through my participation in their camps and watching me play locally.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

I do.  I wanted to make the decision prior to the start of the season.  I really enjoyed the recruiting process, but it’s a great feeling to know that I can devote all my time to this season.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

I would say several factors.  I really feel comfortable with the coaching staff, I know they are going to challenge me every day to be a better ballplayer and person.  Academically, I cannot ask for a better university.  I am also looking forward to playing with several former Prep players that are currently on the roster at Creighton.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

I would definitely say my parents, they spent countless hours working with me.  They gave me every opportunity to achieve my goals.  Also special thanks to all my coaches and to Tyler Goodro and Chris Gradoville for the instruction behind the plate. As well as Creighton Prep’s coaching staff, Coach Mooney, Coach Lanik, Coaches Jerry and Jeff Wellwood, as well as Coach Schlotfeld; they have helped me develop the mental side of my game, and have taught me so much about playing the game with intensity and passion.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

I really enjoyed the competition, the travel, and I made some good friends as well.  Yet it was extremely stressful at times, and a lot more difficult than I expected it to be, but I had a lot of people in my corner to help me reach my goals.

PBR: We noticed you played for the Nebraska Prospects in the fall, what has that experience been like?

It’s a great program.  Rollie Kenny does an excellent job putting his players in great events that are attended by numerous colleges and scouts.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Winning the spring state championship in the spring of 2016, and being able to participate on the USA Midwest 16u team this past fall.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Colby Gomes

PBR: What are your expectations with your junior season?

Continue to work on being a strong leader on and off the field and contend for another state title.
