Q and A with 2013 Lake Erie Commit: Jeremy Wei (Westerville South HS)
January 29, 2013
Jeremy Wei, RHP, Westerville South HS, Class of 2013
PBR: Why did you choose Lake Erie?
Wei: I chose Lake Erie for several reasons. I really liked the academic side of the school, especially the small class sizes, and thought that it would be a great place to get a good education. Coach McGee also has built a great baseball program at Lake Erie that I would like to be a part of. I also really liked all of the coaches and thought that I would develop well there as a pitcher. Lake Erie is also a place where I would like to live for the next four years, and was financially doable for my family.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Wei: I was also considering Ball State, Lincoln Trail, Ohio Dominican, Baldwin Wallace, Otterbein, Ohio State University, Rose- Hulman, Mount Vernon Nazarene, and Tiffin.
PBR: Where did the coaches first see you? How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?
Wei: I believe that they first saw me at a PBR showcase in the fall/winter of 2012. After that Coach McGee and I were in contact quite a bit and had a pretty good relationship. I felt like I really connected with the coaches when my family and I went up there to visit, see the campus, and eventually watch them practice.
PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?
Wei: Personally, I would like to focus more of my time on getting stronger, improving my pitching, and hopefully hitting 90 mph soon. My high school team is looking great this year. We have all improved so much and should do really well. Everybody is working really hard, and we have grown much closer as a team since last year.
PBR: You really jumped on the recruiting this summer with some big numbers at some PBR showcases. How did the showcase affect your recruiting process?
Wei: The showcases helped my recruiting process tremendously. Without them I definitely would not have gotten as much exposure as I did, and would probably still be relatively unknown.
PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?
Wei: I played for my high school legion team during the summer. The most memorable experience was when we won a double header in a Hillsboro tournament. Pitching in the second game under the lights was so much fun, and we were all playing so well. I will never forget it.
PBR: What were your stats this spring season at Westerville South?
Wei: My spring season was affected by my knee injury, but during the summer I had a 4.74 ERA.
PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Ohio?
Wei: There were a lot of really good hitters last year that I faced, but the toughest would have to be Jacob Miller.
