March 21, 2013
Nick Ewalt, LHP, West Jefferson HS, Class of 2013
PBR: Why did you choose Defiance?
Ewalt: I chose Defiance because it felt like a nice fit for me baseball wise and also academic. I really bonded well with the coaches.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Ewalt: I was also considering Bluffton and Sienna Heights
PBR: Where did the coaches first see you? How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?
Ewalt: The coaches first saw me at the PBR unsigned Senior Showcase at Sinclair. From there, Coach Castro contacted me and I went up for a couple visits and it seemed like a great fit.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Ewalt: The coaches expect me to come in and work hard my first year and compete for innings on the mound.
PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that you will help Defiance baseball?
Ewalt: My biggest strength as a pitcher is my ability to compete. I rarely walk anybody and I always keep my team in the game. I use my mind well on the mound to out smart the hitters.
PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?
Ewalt: In the summer, I play for the Columbus Storm. The most memorable experience was probably The Beast of The East tournament.
PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team for the rest of your senior season?
Ewalt: Individually, I want to get better at all aspects of my game. As a team, our goal is to win the MSL and compete for a district title.
PBR: What were your stats for last spring season at West Jefferson?
Ewalt: 6-3 record. 3.7 ERA. 48 k's and 13 walks
PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Ohio?
Ewalt: Probably Ronnie Dawson who is committed to Ohio State. We have had many good battles against each other.
