Q & A With Claxton High School Head Coach Andy Yanzetich
June 20, 2014
PBR: Please tell us a little about yourself and your baseball Program.
Yanzetich: I am in my 18th year of coaching and 2nd year at Claxton High School. Last year was the first year that Claxton made the state playoffs since 2008 and 2nd time in the last 20 years. I have coached 3 first round draft picks in the past. I started out as a hitting coach in college and moved on to high school because of the sincerity of young student athletes.
PBR: Please tell us about your coaching style and about anyone who may have influenced you in your style or philosophy.
Yanzetich: I enjoy teaching every detail that goes in baseball from 1st and 3rd situations to how to strap on shin guards properly. My High School Coach Hugh Buchannon was the biggest influence on me. He is a scout for the Atlanta Braves now and is in the Coaches Hall of Fame in Georgia.
PBR: Is there one game you look forward to every year? One opponent you especially enjoy playing?
Yanzetich: I guess playing against Jenkins County has been fun. We played them twice last year winning 2-0 and 3-2. Each game could have gone either way.
PBR: How do you utilize the summer for your program?
Yanzetich: We try to play about 20 games in the month of June, the first 3 weeks play locally and the last two weeks go on the road and play tournaments.
PBR: What changes have you seen in high school baseball, if any, in recent years?
Yanzetich: I guess the biggest changes to me are everything to do with the pitcher,(the way they stand on the rubber , to the sleeves have to be the same and same length.)
