Progress Report: 2024 LHP Matthew VanOstenbridge (Wilson West Lawn)

This feature checks in with weekly standouts throughout the preseason, comparing the improvements made since our last look. A sophomore left-hander showed measured success at 3up 3down scout day with the ceiling and athleticism for more in the coming years.

 


PROGRESS Report

Last Look Notes: February 27, 2021, Preseason All-State East, The smooth-operating southpaw toed the rubber with a feel for three pitches utilizing good arm-speed out of a quick H 3/4 slot. Attacked into the zone with strike-throwing ability and could spin the baseball when needed. Showed off a quality 64-66 mph CB with tight action across the plate at 2324rpms and ran the FB into the upper 70's (77-79 mph) with more in the tank. 

Recent Improvements: March 1, 2022, 3up 3down Scout Day, VanOstenbridge arrived with confidence in a stronger 5-foot-9, 155lb frame and burst onto the scene with a top bullpen session. The FB was live with riding traits at an average of 20 inches IVB from a 5 foot release. Touched 85 multiple times (83-85 mph) and seasoned the shape on the curveball with plenty of added sweep across the plate (+6 inches HM). Held an average of 2446rpms on the breaker with legitimate swing/miss ability, and killed a 74-75 mph CH with heavy run to the arm-side (18 inches HM). Trending heavily upwards at the moment with loose arm-action.
