PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase
The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held last June 9th at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. The MLB draft will be June 10th and include only five rounds.
We've been building the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/sim-game-type action. We will be ready to roll out our new tech partners, TrackMan, Blast Motion, Driveline, and Vizual Edge.
In the likelihood the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions on that campus we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop on the same date. We also have alternative dates secured later in the summer. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes.
Click on the highlighted player name which is linked to his profile with more video and notes, etc.
A LOOK BACK AT...
P/3B/OF Kevin Haynes (Granite Bay HS) - report from 6/9/19
2020 RHP/3B/OF Kevin Haynes (Sac State Commit) shows a long frame with squared up shoulders at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds (now 6-foot-3, 210-lbs). Haynes is athletically built and uses his length well getting to full speed quickly (7.16 60 yd) showing the baseball knowledge and ability to play multiple spots on the field, working out in the OF, 3B and on the mound.
On the mound, Haynes shows a full repertoire and the athletic delivery needed to be a starter going forward. The delivery has rhythm with the hands dropping to the waist and back up to the chest as Haynes uses a very high knee lift and stride action. The shallow length out of the glove allows the arm to move cleanly to the H-3/4 slot showing the ability to repeat his slot and delivery. The FB worked through the top of the zone with success (82-85 MPH) generating some swing and misses as the pitch looked like a strike finishing above hitters barrels. The CB (74-76 MPH) showed tight over-the-top spin working with short depth before finishing through the bottom of the zone; pitch flashed average. CHG was worked on in warm-ups with some arm-side sink but not used during the outing.
Offensively, Haynes stands tall with high hands relaxing the barrel on the back shoulder while flaring the elbows. The weight gets pushed over the back hip with a controlled front toe lift, allowing the front hip to open and clear for the late bat speed up through the zone. When he slots the top hand keeping it up as the barrel follows through the zone, you see the ball jumping off the bat where he regularly drove balls into the pullside of the field flashing some pop that way (94 EV).
Defensively, Haynes showed he could fit in either corner OF spot or at 3rd base where his loose arm fits with the velocity to make every throw. From RF, Haynes moves easily finding good lines and staying behind the baseball and inline with his bases. The arm has length out of the glove but is smooth and loose moving in time to the H-3/4 release that allowed him to keep balls on bases (87 MPH). At 3rd, the loose hips allowed Haynes to move at good angles working with drop steps and crossovers showing his bouncy feet to go grab the ball. The arm shows length when needing to make a longer throw, but was also able to flick throws from the side when starting the double-play turn (84 MPH); strength to make the throws needed at the position with more available.
Recently committed to Sacramento State, Haynes has the time to figure out his final spot, on the mound or in the field. Right now he should continue to utilize his athletic ability, playing multiple spots and continuing to develop as he has.
