ProCase 2019 - A Look Back at C Cole Carrigg

PBR Northern CA Scouting Staff

PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held last June 9th at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. Of course MLB hasn't announced a draft date yet and we don't know the number of rounds, which could be five at a minimum.

We've begun to build the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/game-type action.

If the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes. We do have alternative future dates/location set.

A LOOK BACK AT...

C/3B Cole Carrigg (Turlock HS) - report from 6/9/19

2020 C/3B Cole Carrigg (San Diego State commit) is listed at 6-foot-2, 175-pounds (now 185-lbs) with a long frame showing a high waist and wide, firm upper half; athletic with quick feet and fluid stride gaining speed as he keeps moving (7.05 60yd). The athleticism allows Carrigg to fit in at multiple spots on the diamond and contributes to all of his tools. Having seen him multiple times over the last two years, he continues to be the type of player that leaves a lasting impression projecting well to the next level at whatever spot on the field he's needed.

At the Norcal ProCase event, Carrigg showed off the bat on both sides of the plate as he ripped balls through the gaps flashing some pop that will continue to grow. It's a controlled, quick load balancing his weight in the back hip before transferring through the baseball as he drives through contact; similar swing mechanics on both sides of the dish. The wrists are loose and easy allowing the quick bat to get on plane early and stay flat a long time through the zone before showing a high two-handed full body finish. His ability to rotate through the center of his body while staying behind the baseball is impressive and when he works with more tilt in the shoulders, the bat shows the big HR pop that he flashed in BP.

When talking about his defensive actions, you have to start with the cannon of an arm he has. Behind the plate that arm was special being compact and firing balls from the ear to 2nd base (1.96-2.03 Pop, 82 MPH) having the life as it kept going through the bag. The transfer and footwork was clean and consistent allowing the arm to work freely. When working at 3rd base, Carrigg showed the arm might have some more projection (88 MPH) letting it loose on throws across the diamond. The footwork at third fits the profile as he has the ability to work low flowing through the baseball or adjust his angles and positioning to make throws to 2nd with loose hips and quick feet showing strong range and a solid first step. Just watch the video of his top-ball play and you can see he's got the instincts to fit at 3rd also.

Switch-hitting catchers with juice from both sides (90 MPH EV on both sides of the plate) are a rarity and with the defense being a premium as well, you can see how talented of a player Carrigg is. In a loaded California HS class of 2020 catchers, don't sleep on Carrigg.
