Previewing Sectional Play: Round One

Post season sectional action begins statewide today and will continue through May 21.  There will undoubtedly be a few surprises and upsets along the road to the State Tournament.  Today we preview a few of the more intriguing early round matchups.

 

CLASS AAa

Region 4, Section 2:  Spring Valley at Cabell Midland

Kirk JenningsPeyton WeeklyThe Cabell Midland Knights enter as the prohibitive favorite ranked No. 3 in the latest Metro News Rankings.  However, Spring Valley has given multiple quality teams all they can handle a
nd has already beaten Cabell Midland once this year.  Specifically the Timberwolves have dropped heart breakers to No. 1 Hurricane 5-4, No. 4 St. Albans 3-2 and No.5 George Washington 8-7.  The two teams split their two games, Spring Valley winning 9-0 and Cabell Midland 9-3.

Key contributors for the the Timberwolves include middle of the order hitters Daniel Brandon and Austin McCloud.  Those two will also play key roles on the mound as will Cody Sharp and Tyus Baumgardner.

The Knights will look to slugging Marshall recruit Kirk Jennings (pictured right) to lead the way. 
Easton Pettit
Trey Chapman and Peyton Weekly (pictured left) should also provide offensive support.  Key innings will be logged by Tanner Brandon and Brennan Holmes. 

 

CLASS Aa

Region 2, Section 1:  Robert C. Byrd at Liberty


Cole KiddyThe Robert C Byrd Eagles and the Liberty Raiders split their two contests in the regular season with the Eagles blowing out the Raiders 12-2 and Liberty winning by a 7-4 score.

Robert C.. Byrd is led offensively by Cole Kiddy (pictured right), Tre Junkins and Caden Wentzel.  Mound innings have been spread out for the Eagles.  Jacob Barnard got the win pitching a run shortened five inning complete game in the earlier victory over Liberty.

Trenton Begley and Tyler Mullens have been key run producers for the Raiders.  Treton Begley has been the Raiders ace but they have also received quality innings from Dylan Basham and Chis Begley.
