Preseason Power 25: No. 21 Bay Port

The Wisconsin high school season kicks off on March 28, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on March 20, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

TOP PLAYERS

Name State School Class Pos Commitment
Quinn Pierner WI Bay Port 2017 SS/RHP
Jordan Nolle WI Bay Port 2017 SS/RHP
Jake Weber WI Bay Port 2017 OF
Aaron Ferkovich WI Bay Port 2017 3B
Brandon Huettl WI Bay Port 2017 OF

X- Factor

Quinn Pierner’s two-way abilities will be a big key to the Pirates success, both logging important innings on the mound and providing stability to the lineup and anchoring the infield defense.

Stat Rat

3: The number of wins returning on the mound, a big hole the Pirates will need to fill in 2017. Bay Port got hit hard by graduation but nowhere harder than on the mound, they will likely have to rely on some arms from last year’s 18-3 JV team.

Outlook

The Pirates are perennial contenders in the Fox River Classic and should be again in 2017. The Pirates and Green Bay Preble will be the conference favorites. The Pirates have consistently been a well coached team and execution will be key for them in 2017, as the firepower may not be the same as it has in year’s past. Coach Simoens will likely need some young players from last year’s JV squad to step up and make an impact. I’d look for the Pirates again to put together a 20 win season while reloading their varsity roster.
