LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The Inaugural PBR California Preseason Invitational will kick off on Saturday, February 12, 2022 as the officially CIF Southern Section sanctioned tournament will play host to some of the top teams from around SoCal and the entire state. With the changes in the rules for permissible games allowed taking effect in 2022, PBR California believed coaches would want every non-league game to be against the best competition they can play against which proved to be true. With over half the field in the California Power 25 rankings, the PBR California Preseason Invitational will be heavily scouted by both our own staff and pro scouts alike thanks to the amount of draft talent participating in the event this year.
Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram for updates throughout the tournament. You can also see the full schedule here.
In the matchup preview we will take a closer look at the Chaminade v Corona game.
CHAMINADE
Preseason Invitational Schedule
2/12 | 2/15 | 2/17 | 2/21 |
Corona | Mira Costa | Yucaipa | TBD |
Our staff is expecting a bounce-back season for Chaminade after a 14-15 record and a 8-10 record in Mission League play last year and it is why they are in our Preseason Invitational. Their program usually sits near the top of the Mission League and competes with perennial powerhouses Harvard Westlake and Notre Dame. Our staff is high on their pitching rotation this year as they bring back their ace in ‘22 Fordham commit Aric Berg and they round out the rotation other high 80s - low 90s arms in USD commit Peter Michael, USC commit Christian Brewster, and Westmont commit Sean Youngerman. If they can get big seasons at the plate from UCLA commit Miles Ghossein, Vinny Van der Wel, Cristian Brewster, Wolf Mahoney, and Gregory Rangel they can make some noise this year.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
ARIC BERG - FORDHAM
CRISTIAN BREWSTER - USC
MILES GHOSSEIN - UCLA
MATT CHURCHILL
WOLF MAHONEY
SEAN YOUNGERMAN - WESMONT
PETER MICHAEL - USD
VINCENT VAN DER WEL
GREG RANGEL
JACKSON TYLER
FROM COACH WILKERSON:
“We have a strong returning pitching staff that pairs with an inexperienced offensive team.”
CORONA
Preseason Invitational Schedule
2/12 | 2/15 | 2/17 | 2/21 |
Chaminade | JSerra | Mira Costa | TBD |
Corona has been a consistent winning program in the state of California for many years now as they have won 20+ games in the last 5 full seasons. With expectations from our staff of another successful season, they are in our Preseason Invitational tournament. They bring back two talented committed bats from last year's team in ‘22 UCLA commit Andrew Walters and ‘24 LBSU commit Josh Springer and a quality pitching staff with a lot of LH arms like sophomore ‘24 UCLA commit Ethan Schiefelbein and ‘22 Northern Colorado commit Ely Ruiz. They have depth up and down the roster and we wouldn't be surprised if they put together a deep playoff run this spring.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
ANDREW WALTERS - UCLA
ETHAN SCHIEFELBEIN - UCLA
JOSH SPRINGER - LBSU
SETH MIFFLIN
ELY RUIZ - NORTHERN COLORADO
JAKE SKELSKEY
SAM BURGESS - CSUF
DANIEL RIVERA
BYRON LUPIAN
TROY MCCAIN - CAL POLY SLO
FROM COACH WISE:
"With the talent on this season's roster the expectations will be as high as ever. This group will be very deep on the mound to support what should be an extremely long lineup. A couple of guys offensively can carry a team for periods at a time. Also have a couple guys on the mound that have shown the ability to dominate. For these reasons we should be contenders every time they step on the field, and could possibly put together another nice D1 playoff run"
