Today we examine the outfielders at the Prep Baseball Report Preseason All-State Showcase that took place on February, 19 at The MAX.  The outfielders showed well at the event, led by Anthony Ray, an athletically built 6-foot-1, 160-pound athlete who showed all the tools to be a high-level prospect.

A look at all the outfielders at the Preseason All-State Showcase:

1. Anthony Ray, OF, St. Rita HS, Class of 2013
Ray is a one of the premier athletes in the Class of 2013 with his ability to excel in all aspects of the game.  The lanky, 6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder moves with fluidity in the outfield, taking precise routes to the baseball.  He is aggressive at his position, playing through the ball and displaying soft hands.  He showed the best positional arm strength at the event, clocked at 88 mph with excellent carry. Ray, who ran a 6.88 60, also exhibited tremendously quick hands and barrel whip through the zone at the plate. He hits from an open setup, and has an aggressive plate approach. For his slight frame, he generates impressive torque in his swing.

2. Joe Hoscheit, OF, St. Charles East HS, Class of 2013
Hoscheit is a muscular 6-foot, 205-pound athletic outfielder who is one of the more physically impressive prospects in the class.  He uses every bit of his strength to his advantage, showing well in all facets of the game.  At the plate, Hoscheit has a balanced setup with a smooth load and takes an economical approach to the baseball.  He is quick and explosive to the ball, and he uses his strong lower half to power through the baseball.  He maintains excellent balance throughout contact and gets good extension on his swing.  Defensively, Hoscheit moves well in the outfield and showcased a solid arm (84 mph) that had carry.  Additionally, Hoscheit ran a 7.26 60.

3. Jake Ring, OF, Grant HS, Class of 2013
Ring is a 6-foot, 175-pound outfielder who showed well in all facets of the game. He put his athleticism on display in the 60, running a 6.92, and in the outfield.  Defensively, Ring moves with ease and takes concise routes to the baseball.  He had one of the most accurate and strongest arms at the event (87 mph), with throws that were consistently around home plate.  Offensively, Ring has an advanced approach at the plate and takes an economical approach to the baseball.  He has an easy left-handed swing and an explosive lower half with excellent balance. 

4. Danny Rafferty, OF, Loyola HS, Class of 2013
Rafferty is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound outfielder who impressed with his quick and compact left-handed swing.  Rafferty has an explosive lower half and is able to create good whip through the zone.  Rafferty has an aggressive plate approach, and the ball jumps off his bat. He exhibited good extension after contact.In the outfield, Rafferty exhibited a solid arm with carry (83 mph).  Additionally, Rafferty ran a 7.32 60.

5. Frankie Perrone, OF, Maine South HS, Class of 2013
Perrone is an athletic, solidly built 5-foot-9, 165-pound outfielder who impressed with his outfield play, taking good routes to the baseball and getting on top of his throws.  Perrone showed aggressiveness in the outfield with his ability to play through the baseball. His throws were clocked at 85 mph. At the plate, Perrone has an aggressive approach. He showed impressive whip through the zone and drove the ball with gap-to-gap authority. Additionally, Perrone showed his athleticism by running a 7.05 60.

6. Luc Dimaso, OF, Elk Grove HS, Class of 2013
Dimaso is a 5-foot-9, 150-pound outfielder who impressed with his arm strength, as he was clocked at clocked at 87 mph. His throws were accurate and displayed carry and ride. Dimaso looked like a natural in the outfield, as he took exact routes to the ball and moved with fluidity and purpose.  Offensively, Dimaso has an aggressive plate approach. He has a slightly open setup and has a level bat path in his swing.  Additionally, Dimaso ran a 6.99 60.

7. Dominic Demicco, OF/RHP, Lake Zurich HS, Class of 2013
Demicco is a 6-foot, 190-pound two-way player who showed well in all facets of the game. On the mound, Demicco features an 83-85 mph fastball with some late life. He demonstrated feel for three pitches, which included a 68-71 mph sweeping breaking ball, and a 73-75 mph changeup. His changeup demonstrated sink and looks to be a promising outpitch. Defensively, Demicco showed well in the outfield, using his strong, athletic frame to get downhill on his throws (84 mph).  At the plate, the left-handed hitting Demicco has quick hands and creates impressive torque in his swing. His barrel stays through the zone and showed the ability to drive the ball with authority and loft. Additionally, Demicco ran a 7.2 60.

8. Peter Doughty, OF, York HS, Class of 2013
Doughty is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound outfielder who features an extremely easy and fluid left-handed swing.  He has a balanced, smooth load and takes an economical approach to the baseball.  Doughty has a relaxed plate approach, and he utilizes his lower half well.  Defensively, Doughty gets on top of his throws well and was clocked at 81 mph.  Additionally, he ran a 7.22 60.

9. Troy Vandenbroek, OF/INF, Belvidere HS, Class of 2013
Vandenbroek is a strong-bodied, athletic 5-foot-10, 185-pound multi-positional player who plays the game hard. In the outfield, he takes aggressive routes to the baseball and showed a solid, accurate arm, as he was clocked at 84 mph. At shortstop, Vandenbroek again showed arm strength (82 mph).  Vandenbroek, who ran a 7.13 60, took his same aggressive approach to the plate. He certainly doesn’t get cheated in the box, as he swings with force, using his strong lower half to generate torque and pop.

10. Michael Lorenz, OF, Lyons Township HS, Class of 2013
Lorenz is a 6-foot, 160-pound outfielder who impressed with his all-around athleticism and skill. Lorenz, who ran a 7.0 60, moved with fluidity and purpose in the outfield while showing off an accurate arm (81 mph) with some carry.  Offensively, Lorenz is a left-handed hitter who exhibited hand speed and barrel whip through the zone.  He demonstrated a fundamental approach at the plate, one that included good balance and lower half rotation.

Grant Anderson, OF, Deer-Creek Mackinaw HS, Class of 2013
Anderson was the best runner at the Preseason All-State Showcase, as the solid 6-foot-1, 180-pound outfielder posted an event-best 6.84 60.  Defensively, Anderson has an accurate arm and was clocked at 78 mph.

Devin Boehm, OF, New Trier HS, Class of 2013
Boehm is a 6-0, 175-pound outfielder who was clocked at 75 mph from his position.  Offensively, Boehm has a balanced setup and a smooth load.  He features a short stride and level bat path in his swing.

Robbie Bowman, OF, Batavia HS, Class of 2013
Bowman is an athletically built 6-foot, 190-pound outfielder who impressed with his athleticism, running a 7.02 60.  In the outfield, Bowman showed accurate throws and was clocked at 80 mph. Offensively, Bowman showed bat speed at the plate.

Cully Day, OF, Mahomet-Seymour HS, Class of 2014
Day is a 6-foot, 172-pound outfielder who showed well at the plate with his easy left-handed swing.  He maintained excellent balance throughout his swing and approaches the ball with a level bat path.  In Defensively, Day showed natural outfield actions and made accurate throws (78 mph).  Additionally, Day ran a 7.55 60.

Brogan Fischer, RHP/OF, Alton-Marquette Catholic HS, Class of 2013
Fischer is a two-way player who impressed with his all-around abilities.  In the outfield, the 5-foot-8, 160-pound Fischer moved with fluidity and ease, taking good routes and showed the ability to play through the baseball.  Fischer showcased one of the strongest arms of the event, 85 mph, with good carry and accuracy.  Offensively, Fischer has a balanced setup and exhibited a sense of rhythm in the box.  He used his solid lower half to create whip through the zone and maintained excellent balance throughout and good extension after contact.  On the mound, Fischer features a 78-82 mph fastball that had some arm side run and sink.  His off-speed pitches consisted of a 70-71 mph slider that flashed tight spin, and a 75-78 mph changeup.

Anthony Fortunato, OF, Palatine HS, Class of 2013
Fortunato is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder who showed well defensively, moving with ease and athleticism.  He displayed good hands and an accurate arm (78 mph).  Offensively, Fortunato has a balanced setup with a smooth load and an advanced approach at the plate.  He features an easy left-handed swing with an explosive lower half while maintaining excellent balance throughout.  Fortunato generates bat speed through the zone and good extension after contact.

Kevin Giltz, OF, Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Class of 2013
Giltz is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound outfielder who takes sound routes to the ball and plays through the baseball.  Giltz was clocked at 81 mph from the outfield.  Offensively, he hits from an open setup and exhibited a fundamental line drive swing.  Giltz also showed his athleticism by running a 7.22 60.

Eric Hall, OF, Richards HS, Class of 2013
Hall is a solidly built 5-foot-10, 175-pound outfielder who ran a 7.29 60 and was clocked at 78 mph from his position.  Offensively, Hall has a balanced setup and a level swing.

Nick Hieb, RHP/OF, Normal West HS, Class of 2013
Hieb is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound two-way player who has raw arm strength.  On the mound, Hieb has a quick arm and displayed little effort in his delivery.  His fastball topped at 85 mph; he also flashed a 64-67 mph breaking ball, and 68-71 mph changeup.  Defensively, Hieb again put his arm strength on display from the outfield (86 mph) with accurate throws that showed carry and life.  Additionally, Hieb ran a 7.2 60.

Tanner Kiser, OF/LHP, Lake Zurich, Class of 2013
Kiser is a physical 6-foot-1, 202-pound two-way player. Offensively, the left-handed hitter has an aggressive approach and fast hands, as he showcased raw pull-power potential. The ball jumps off his bat with backspin carry. Defensively, Kiser took aggressive, athletic routes to the baseball and plays through the baseball well.  Kiser, who ran a 7.27 60, showed an accurate arm from the outfield, clocked at 80 mph.  On the mound, the left-hander operates from a high 3/4 arm slot and uses his strong body to his advantage.  Kiser’s three pitches included: an 80-81 mph fastball with run, a 68-71 mph breaking ball, and a 76-77 mph changeup.

Matthew Malecki, C/OF, Richmond Burton HS, Class of 2013
Malecki is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound multi-positional talent who impressed at the plate with his advanced approach and easy swing.  Malecki has a balanced setup with a smooth load and takes an economical approach to the baseball.  He gets good extension on his swing and maintains solid balance throughout. The ball comes off his bat with considerable authority.  Defensively, Malecki showed solidly behind the plate, posting a best pop time of 2.06 and was clocked at 78 mph from the crouch.  In the outfield, Malecki showed his athleticism with an accurate arm (84 mph) and solid hands.

Tyler Murphy, OF, Carmel Catholic HS, Class of 2013
Murphy is a 5-foot-10, 183-pound outfielder who impressed with his loose left-handed swing.  Murphy has a relaxed plate approach, one that included rhythm, fluidity and aggressiveness. He is short and quick to the baseball, and generated considerable whip through the zone. His barrel stays through the hitting zone as he drove the baseball with authority. Defensively, Murphy moves athletically and was clocked at 77 mph from the outfield. 

Michael Pilas, OF/RHP, Mt. Carmel HS, Class of 2013
Pilas is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way player who showed well in all facets of the game.  On the mound, Pilas has a quick, loose arm. His fastball topped at 82 mph, while his off-speed pitches included a 75-76 mph slider,  a 75 mph changeup with some sink, and a splitter that showed hard action when down in the zone.  Defensively, Pilas has an accurate arm that showed some carry to it (81 mph) and took aggressive routes in the outfield.  Offensively, Pilas has a balanced setup and a short, compact swing.  Pilas, who ran a ran a 7.27 60, sprayed line drives to all fields. 

Carl Sanders, OF/SS, Glenbard South HS, Class of 2013
Sanders is a 5-foot-10, 145-pound outfielder who ran a 7.05 60. Sanders’ athleticism also translated in the field, as he moved with lateral ease. In the outfield, Sanders fielded the ball in rhythm, and was accurate with his throws (74 mph).  Offensively, Sanders has a slightly open setup and a short stride to the baseball.  He maintains good balance throughout his swing.

Alec Semersky, OF/1B, Libertyville HS, Class of 2013
Semersky is a physically impressive 6-foot-3, 195-pound multi-positional player who showed good athleticism in all facets of the game.  Semersky ran a 7.08 60, and his athleticism continued to shine in the outfield as he moved with fluid purpose to the ball.  Semersky showed an accurate arm and was clocked at 75 mph from the position. At first base, Semersky showed excellent glovework around the bag. Offensively, Semersky has a fundamental approach at the plate. He showcased a quick and compact swing and the ability to square up the baseball.

Terrell Steward, OF, Harlan Community HS, Class of 2013
Steward is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound outfielder who impressed with his raw arm strength. Steward showed life on his throws to the plate with carry and ride; he was clocked at 85 mph from the outfield.  Offensively, Steward has a balanced setup and uses his lower half well.  Steward has a short stride to the ball and showed some power potential when he squared the ball up.

Mike Virgilio, LHP/OF, Maine South HS, Class of 2013
Virgilio is a 6-foot-2, 165-pound two-way player who looks to be a promising left-handed pitching prospect.  Virgilio throws from over the top slot and has little effort in his delivery.  He commanded the zone with three pitches: a 78-81 mph fastball with some arm-side run, a 65-66 mph curveball that flashed tight spin, and a 70-74 mph changeup that has sink.  Defensively, Virgilio showed well in the outfield with his accurate throws (78 mph) and good routes to the baseball. Virgilio ran a 7.52 60.
