Preseason Spotlight: Lower Moreland Lions (District 1)

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The Lower Moreland Lions are coming off a 12-8 campaign in 2012 and a first round District I playoff loss to Pope John Paul II. The Lions only return four starters from that team and two pitchers with any varsity experience. The Lions will have to hope their offense carries them until the young pitching staff has a chance to settle in and adjust to the varsity game.

PocrassFirst baseman Jordan Pocrass hit .479 with 23 runs scored and 27 RBI in 2012. The 5-foot-11 junior was selected to the Bicentennial Athletic Conference 1st-Team and will be relied upon heavily to repeat those numbers in 2013.

Ryan Killion, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound prospect has the ability to play nearly anywhere on the field. He will likely see time at as a behind the plate, in the infield as well as in the outfield during the course of the season. Killion hit .438 in 2012 with 27 runs scored and 22 RBI. The junior will need to team with Pocrass in the middle of the order to supply offensive punch for an inexperienced lineup.

Pocrass and senior LHP Mark Dougherty accounted for 27 innings on the mound for the Lions in 2012. The remaining 110 innings were worked by players who have since graduated. In total, Coach Dennis Murphy will be looking to replace seven pitchers who have graduated. Murphy sees a good balance of contact and power throughout his offensive lineup. He feels the team weaknesses leading into the 2013 season are a lack of varsity arms and infield defense.
