Preseason Preview: Big Spring HS (District 3)

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The Big Spring Bulldogs are coming off a 3rd place finish in the Mid-Penn Colonial Conference and a 1st round state playoff loss to eventual Class AAA State Champion West York. The Bulldogs return five starters and two pitchers with significant varsity experience for another run at a state playoff spot in 2013.

Head Coach Sam Barnouski feels that the strength of his roster lies in pitching and defense. He will rely on RHP/3B Kyler Brown and RHP/OF Dylan Johnson to anchor the pitching rotation this year. Brown is a 6-foot, 220-pound senior who sits in the mid-80's with a plus curveball. Johnson is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior who was selected a Mid-Penn All-Star and to the Patriot News All-Underclassmen Team as a sophomore in 2012.

KotzmoyerOther starters who return include three-year starter Hunter Kotzmoyer. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound center fielder played in the inaugural Big 26 Classic last summer and the Keystone State Games. He is a two time Mid-Penn All-Star and is currently ranked No. 106 in the PBR Pennsylvania Class of 2013. Hunter Shannon, a 6-foot, 175-pound catcher returns from his junior year. He hit .300 as a sophomore and is a polished receiver. Michael Piper, a 5-foot-9, 145-pound junior will become the everyday shortstop in 2013 after splitting time between 2B and SS a year ago.

A question mark heading into the season for Barnouski will be his team's depth. Underclassmen who will be looked upon to supply some of that depth are sophomore RHP/1B Lowell Singer, sophomore infielder Tanner Rhoads and freshman RHP/3B Bryce Roth.
