Player Spotlight: 2020 SS/RHP Jacob Lapham (Lansingburgh HS)
March 29, 2018
Our "Player Spotlights" will be reserved for any prospect across New York who's abilities on the field have made some noteworthy recent buzz. Possibly a recent event where a Top Performer Spotlight article is just not enough, or maybe a recent commitment to a major program. Whatever it is, I'll (Dan Cevette) be going in-depth on the player spotlighted below with personal insight and honest feedback. Let's get started.
Jacob Lapham SS / RHP / Lansingburgh, NY / 2020Rankings StateRank: 18 / POS: 5
CEVETTE'S QUICK HIT: I loved the athletic build, likely to gain some size as he continues to physically develop. Runs well, short swing path, and was defensively a standout. Moves with confidence, glove will only get better and the arm is premium. He also impressed on the mound with advanced velocity and feel for a curveball. Future is bright for the greater Albany area prospect, will see him at the NYS Games where his stock should sky-rocket. SCOUTING REPORT: Very athletic body frame standing 6-foot-1, 170-pounds with plenty of size projection in his near future. He ran a 4.33 home to first time on lasers, shows an above-average arm in the middle infield at 89 mph, and also was 80 mph off a tee testing his exit velocity but expect that number to climb as the summer months approach. At the plate, he uses a slightly open stance from the right side, wide base, hands relaxed at his back shoulder, barrel points at a 45 degree angle. on the pitch he strides back to even, hands are compact and short to the ball, path is slightly uphill, medium length to his extension, would like to see a more aggressive full finish in the future. Defensively, extremely range e loose lower half active to the ball, wide base fields out in front, quick clean funnel to a high 3/4 release shows well above average arm strength peaking at 89 mph, sitting in the 84-87 mph range. On the mound there is plenty to dream on, mechanics are very sound for his age, appear to be repeatable with fluid tempo, he uses a high knee lift, arm action is back and shorter, releases from a high 3/4 slot with full extension out in front over his left knee, long stride with above average hip flexibility. Fastball peaked at 83 mph showing some depth at times. curveball sits in the 70 - 71 mph range, at times has 12-6 shape. Exciting young prospect from the greater Albany area.
