Player Spotlight: RHP Luke Matheny (Westminster, 2015)

RHP Luke Matheny is a 6-foot-2 170-pound hurler that posted a 6-2 record this spring and led Westminster to a fourth-straight state title in Missouri Class 4.  He fanned 73 batters in 48.1 innings and posted a 1.88 ERA for the Wildcats. 

Matheny has deceptive delivery and an extremely quick arm with smooth rhythm and easy effort, the ball looks to really jump out of his hand. His fastball sat 83-85 mph with hard arm side run down in the zone. His breaking ball had gradual 11-to-5 break thrown 70-72 mph, and while not thrown often, was effective to keep hitters off balance. Matheny also threw a 72-75 mph change up with good depth and looks to be his go to pitch.

Here is a question and answer with Matheny to see how the recruiting process is going.

PBR: What schools have expressed interest in you?

Matheny: Missouri State, Miami of Ohio, Saint Louis University

PBR: Have you taken any visits, or have any visits scheduled in the near future? If so, what schools, and how recently?

Matheny:I have visited Ohio State University in January

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Matheny:  nothing specific in schools

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?

Matheny:  During my junior year I was 6-2 with a 1.88 ERA in 48.3 innings pitched. My team was 31-5 and won state for class 4.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season?

Matheny:  My goals for the senior season are to lead the team by being our ace pitcher and hopefully get back to another state championship. Id like to go without a loss on the season and keep an ERA under 2.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Matheny: I play for the Midland Redskins out of Cincinnati Ohio. I will play a few fall ball tournaments with them in Florida and then I'll play with some kids from Westminster on a local team.

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Matheny:  I do not play any other sports.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

Matheny: My GPA is a 3.05 and my ACT was a 24.
