The qualities that indicate a prospect has the makings of a quality second baseman at the next level vary depending on who you ask. Some coaches will tell you that they are looking for shortstops that hit well but lack a plus arm to slide to the other side of the infield in college. With the institution of the BBCOR bat rules other coaches prioritize a standout defender who can turn the double play. Today's "12 Days of Christmas" article focuses on the most promising second basemen in Pennsylvania.
-
Cory Gantz, Class of 2013, Hempfield HS
Gantz is a 6-foot, 170-pound UNC-Wilmington recruit who has good hands and an 85 mph arm across the infield. The left-handed hitter is also a quality pitcher who sits in the mid-80's with a solid slider and changeup. He has been recruited to pitch for the Seahawks, but may have the opportunity to be a two-way player. Gantz is ranked No. 40 in the PA Class of 2013.
-
Sam Fragale, Class of 2013, Seneca Valley HS
Fragale is a 5-foot-9, 195-pound Virginia Tech recruit who plays baseball like a middle linebacker. He has a bulldog mentality on the diamond and runs a 7.0 60-yard dash. The four year high school starter has good pop in his bat and an 80 mph arm across the diamond. Fragale is ranked No. 45 in the PA Class of 2013. -
Nick Stotler, Class of 2014, Plum HS
Stotler is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect from Plum HS. He is a talented athlete who runs a 6.97 60-yard dash and throws 82 mph across the infield. With an 87 mph arm from the outfield Stotler is a potential shortstop or outfielder at the next level. He is ranked No. 32 in the PA Class of 2014. -
P.J. DeMeo, Class of 2013, Central Catholic HS
Demeo is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound switch-hitter who has shown some pop from both sides of the plate. The University of Pittsburgh recruit runs a 7.10 60-yard dash and has a strong arm across the infield at 82 mph. DeMeo is ranked No. 117 in the PA Class of 2013. -
