PBRT Arizona Fall Championship Scout Blog: Day 1

The PBRT Arizona Fall Championships kicked off last night with a lot of notable performances from prospects of multiples classes (2020-2024's). Take a look for yourself..

2024 Prospects

2024 RHP Corbin Gull (Spanish Fork, UT) 
Came out the bullpen for Trosky Baseball on Day 1 of the PBR Fall Championships. The 5-foot-7, 140-pound RHP ran his FB up to 77 and showed a hard slider out of the same window. Showed an extremely quick and clean arm action for his age. Gull clearly is an intriguing prospect, but struggles to repeat his delivery at times. Should continue to make tremendous gains in his pitchability and velocity as he gains strength.

2024 SS Chris Newstrom (Chaparral, AZ) 
Is a name you will be hearing about for years to come. Athletic 6-foot-1, 170-pound middle infielder with proportional strength and quick-twitch tendencies. Looks to be a high-level national prospect playing for the Scottsdale Dirtbags Black. Moves with fluidity and confidence. Made advanced plays at 3B, SS and 2B in the first game. Loose, athletic arm action, shows ability to throw from multiple angles, plays exceptionally well on the move with plenty of arm to stick on the left side of the dirt. Plays the game with a level of moxie and ease, yet plays hard. Offensively, has advanced rhythm in the hand/load, generates bat speed with his hands. Overall has an advanced presence in the box.

2024 RHP Noah Anderson (AZ Rattlers, AZ)
Came into the event listed solely as an RHP, but displayed some loud contact as a LHH. The already developed 6-foot-0, 160-pound Anderson, squared up multiple balls into the LCF gap. The swing will continue to improve with overall athleticism, he showed that he's strong enough to hit balls with authority. As he matures, we may see Anderson shift into a position player, or at least a 2-way prospect. 

2024 OF/RHP Julian Areliz (USA Prime, CA) 
Will likely garner plenty of attention in high school. The proportionally strong 6-0/160-pound right-handed hitter has a mature, quiet and calm presence in the box. Mechanically simple and balanced, direct path and strong through contact. Seemingly on time with everything; squared up balls in all his at-bats. High-level follow down the road.

2024 SS AJ Diaz (Seton Catholic HS, AZ)
Advanced defensive middle infielder. Easy, confident hands, gets it out front, fields the ball with rhythm, average carry across the diamond. Offensively barreled up two balls at the centerfielder for the Scottsdale Dirtbags.

2024 OF Zach Carlson (Chaparral, AZ)
5-foot-8, 135-pound left-handed hitting leadoff man and centerfielder for the Scottsdale Dirtbags. Quick-twitch athlete, loose hands, generates bat speed. Inside-out approach. Moves well in the outfield.

2024 INF Matt Hansen (USA Prime Mountain)
Wiry-athletic 5-foot-11, 150-pound left-handed hitter who generates advanced bat speed and takes aggressive hacks in the box. Overall quick-twitch athlete with raw abilities.

2024 OF Dante Nori (USA Prime Mountain, CO)
5-foot-8, 135-pound left-handed hitting table-setter who swings with controlled aggression and generates bat speed with his hands. He inside-outed a pair of hits for USA Prime; gets out of the box well and is aggressive on the bases.

2023 Prospects

2023 Eric Dessens (Notre Dame Prep, AZ)
5-foot-11 145-pound infielder with extremely quick twitch actions, both at the plate and in the field. Lanky frame, with room to grow and add strength. As a LHH for Team Dinger 2023, he showed present bat speed, to go with developing strength in his hands and forearms. As a 3B today, he displayed quick feet to go along with soft hands. Tends to play upright defensively at times, but overall athleticism allows him to still get to balls to both sides of the body. 

2023 Owen Wade (Pinnacle, AZ)
Stood out early in their contest vs. TCA Black. The 6-foot 160-pound. shortstop, has broad shoulders and room to grow. Starting from a taller set-up, Wade displayed quick hands, while lacing the first pitch of the game back up the box. The AZ Athletics prospect, showed balanced set-up, from a slightly open stance. Looked to have advance knowledge of the strike zone, while displaying good pitch recognition. Had another loud out in the contest. Easy to see power developing, as he ages.

2023 Wyatt Halvorson (Chaparral, AZ)
5-foot-11 185-pound catcher for the Arizona Athletics organization. 2019 PBR Junior Futures Games participant. While only time will tell if Halvorson can stick behind the plate, it is very clear that the power potential will play no matter where he finds himself defensively. Hitting from a slightly open stance, Halvorson displays a mature strength that stood out in our look today. He will need to work on consistency with his bat path, but overall improvement in athleticism with age, should help tremendously.

2023 Tyler Clementz & Dallin Harrison (Basha HS, AZ)
After watching the 5:30PM game vs AZBC, the future looks bright for Basha High School. Top to bottom they made it difficult to write up any one player that stood out from the rest of the team. Hitting 2nd for Basha, Tyler Clementz went 3 for 3 in the game. Dallin Harrison had a little bit of a quiet night but had a real advanced approach with controlled body movements from the left side of the plate, looking to do damage. Overall the lineup was full of twitchy athletes with medium bases with short & compact swings. More than a handful of LHHs that consistently barreled the ball up all night.

 

2023 C Carson McEntire (Mountain Ridge, AZ)
AZBC has some good young talent and showed well against Basha HS. McEntire hit 3rd in the AZBC order and showed some legit pop. He went 2 for 3 in the game. One ball he hit was an impressive barreled up broken bat frozen rope to LCF. Simple approach at the plate with no extra movement. Projectable athlete from a large build that has a ton of room to add strength. Defensively, he was quiet and mobile- received well. 

2023 SS Garren Rizzo (Palos Verde HS, CA)
Has an advanced middle-away approach in the box as he delivered a pair of hits for Trosky National hitting out of the leadoff hole. Lean, athletic 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitter, all-around solid baseball skills across the board. 
2023 3B Dom Puentes (Kerman HS, CA)
Has strength throughout his 5-foot-11, 155-pound frame and looks to get his swing off. Aggressive approach, looks to lift, smashed a double to left-center field. 2023 RHP Daniel Hernandez (James Logan HS, CA)
came out of the pen for Trosky National pumping strikes at 79-80 mph, easy out of the hand. Short, compact arm circle, hides it well coming out of a high slot, works downhill with open landing. Struck out two of three in the first inning. Threw mostly fastballs, down angle, plays true. Should continue to see velocity gains as he fills into his thin, long-limbed frame.

2023 C Zachary Justice (Bishop O’Dowd HS, CA)
strong-armed catcher who has presence and maturity behind the dish for Trosky National. Pop times ranged between 2.12-2.20, sticks pitches well. Aggressive, balanced approach, uphill path, average bat speed with strength throughout 5-10/160 frame.

2023 1B Zachary Wadas (Brophy College Prep, AZ)
highly projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed hitting first baseman who showcased loose hands. Currently has a rotational approach and has yet to fill into his long-limbed frame, but with continued physical development, he has the makings of a highly intriguing prospect.

2023 RHP TJ Peters (Bericia HS, TX)
Started for Trosky National and was around the zone consistently with his fastball/curveball mix. Thin, long-limbed 5-foot-11, 150-pound frame, high-3/4 slot with slight pause in the back, fastball ranged between 75-77 mph and mixed in 64-66 breaking ball with 10/4 shape.

2023 SS Michael Caruso (Desert Vista HS, AZ)
Was a clear standout for DV Thunder. The thin 5-foot-10 right-handed hitter moves with fluidity and ease at shortstop, ranging well to both sides, and exhibited soft, easy hands out front. Above average carry across the diamond, and plays well on the move. Overall high-level defender. Offensively, has significant waggle in the load, but demonstrated enough bat speed to get to the pitch.

2023 Derek Schaefer (Cactus Shadows HS, AZ)
Stymied a talented USA Prime Mountain squad, needing only 77 pitches to throw a five-hit shutout to lead the Scottsdale Dirtbags to a 4-0 victory in the 14U division. Pounded the strike zone with his fastball/curveball combination. Mixed up his delivery cadence on occasion but maintained his landing and arm path. The arm works free and easily, high-3/4 slot, clean and compact in the back, loose out front. Wiry-thin 6-0/150-pound frame. Confident mound demeanor. Only walked one and struck out two. Mid-70s fastball; looks to be plenty more in the tank as he physically develops … Offensively, showed loose hands and a balanced approach.

2021 Prospects

2021 INF Derek Silva (Southwest El Centro, CA)
The loudest & most driven ball of the night goes to Advance Baseball, Derek Silva. Well above average athlete from a Medium build with some present strength. With his locked in approach and demeanor at the plate, it was no surprise that he got ahold of one eventually. He struck out in his first AB of the night but looked good. Bounced back to drive in the games winning runs with a bases loaded 3B at the end of the game. He has a quiet set up with good rhythm in his hands from a medium slightly open base. In the field, hes quick, has good hands and carry across the diamond.

2021 RHP Cesar Ledezema (Atrisco Heritage, NM)
MAC Elite rolled out a couple of projectable arms going forward. Cesar Ledezema started the game and shut down Advance Baseball in his innings of work. Cesar has an XL Durable frame with sneaky athletic movements. He threw a firm 81-83 T84mph FB and worked in an above average slurve when he got extended. With more performance & athleticism training he could be an interesting arm to follow. He also hit in the middle of the order and played first base. Two other arms that came in relief that could be good follows down the road are Dalton Snell & Isaac Horstman- both with tall projectable bodies and long limbs working in the low 80's. 2020 Prospects

2020 RHP Saulito Reynoso (N/A, CA)
From a Large durable frame at 6'1" 195lbs, Reynoso worked 79-81, topping out at 82mph for Elite National Team out of CA. Displaying a tall but smooth & easy delivery with repeatability. He hit his spots throughout the game and worked down in the zone. More in the tank with more physical development and mobility. We were told that he struck-out 13 batters on the day.
