PBRT Alabama Open: Best in Show

By PBRT Staff

From June 9-11, PBR Alabama was on-hand in Albertsville, AL., at the site of the PBRT Alabama Open. You can find daily standout stories from the event here: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3

Today, we’ll be identifying the top talent in attendance, ranking the top-10 overall prospects, and highlighting some more of the talent worth following through the remainder of the summer.

 BEST IN SHOW, TOP-10 PROSPECTS

Jamarkius Smith RHP / SS / Reeltown, AL / 2027

Smith was far and away the most impressive prospect to touch the diamond on Day 1 of the tournament, showcasing some electric stuff on the bump in a short stint to open pool play. Already having cemented himself as one of the top arms in the young rising freshman class, Smith is a special multi-sport prospect that is listed at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds with dynamic athleticism that shows up in everything he does. Working on just a 30-40 pitch count, the right-hander held 87-90 mph with serious arm side run throughout his outing that consistently overpowered hitters in the zone. Albeit the velocity is very impressive for a prospect of his age, what stood out the most was his ability and feel to spin a late-breaking slider that operated at 74-76 mph and registered spin rates near the 2600 rpm mark. He collected some uncomfortable swings-and-misses with the offering, and showed the ability to land it arm-side against left-handed hitters. Smith works from a true ¾ arm slot that produces a fast, whippy arm and is an athletic mover down the mound. It’s obvious to see how talented Smith was during the outing, as he caught the attention of many in attendance with wipeout stuff. Although he’s still got much more development and physical maturation to come in the next few years, he is certainly once to circle and keep close tabs on moving forward.

(PBR Classic, 6/19/23)

James Lucas C / Vestavia Hills, AL / 2025

Lucas enjoyed a stellar tournament all weekend long and was a driving force hitting in the heart of the Excel lineup. Listed at 5-foot-10, 195-pounds, the rising junior was an extra-base hit machine driving balls to all parts of the field, including a mammoth three-run home run over the wall in left field at the stadium giving his team an earlyy lead in the 17U Championship. The right-hander is built like a prototypical catcher with proportional strength throughout his frame, and possesses plenty of thunder off of his barrel. One to follow in the rising junior class in AL.

Brady Wilson RHP / Decatur Heritage Christian, AL / 2025

From PBR Alabama Top Prospect Games (6/13/23): "Uncommitted. 6-foot-6, 215-pounds. Towering frame with still plenty of projection to be had. Could still benefit more from added strength and continue to fill out to massive build. Mixed all three above-average offerings for strikes throughout his outing, in which he tossed a scoreless frame during gameplay. Works exclusively from the stretch. Utilizes high ¾ arm slot with a bit of crossfire delivery. Pumped tailing fastball that operated near the 85-88 mph range for the majority of his outing and touched 89 mph early. Solid metrics on the fastball, posted a 19.8 in. HM avg., 91% zone percentage, and 94% spin efficiency, all of which were event-bests. Slider spins well at 75-78 mph while registering spin rates north of 2400 rpm. Features late bite with sharp horizontal break and was landed for strikes (71% zone percentage). Also mixed in diving changeup that killed spin, registering an average spin rate of 1298 rpm. Plenty to like with a towering frame and quality three-pitch mix in the rising junior class in AL."

Henry Gimenez 1B / Mountain Brook, AL / 2026

A strong bodied and physical rising sophomore at 6-foot-3, 205-pounds who hits in the heart of the Excel lineup. Came up in a bases loaded situation during their matchup on Friday and just missed a grand slam. Giminez settled for a deep double that would one hop the fence in the gap and clear the bases to really shift all the momentum to one side. Well developed body and bigger frame who can use the middle and pull side to his advantage with easy pop.

Milo Obradovich C / OF / Northridge, AL / 2024

Obradovich has really gotten off to a good start to begin his summer with Excel and was a key component that led to their 17U Championship in the tournament. Listed at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds, the uncommitted rising senior has some lean strength throughout his frame and is a solid athlete, as well. After being a top performer at the Excel Scout Day a couple weeks ago, Obradovich once again performed at a high level this weekend with multiple hits in the leadoff spot. He has a good feel to hit and possesses gap-to-gap pop from the right side of the plate. Versatile defender that is a high-follow in terms of uncommitted rising seniors in AL.

Mayson Elam SS / 2B / Northridge, AL / 2026

Elam is already regarded as one of the top middle infielders in the rising sophomore class in AL, and showed why he was deserving of that recognition with a strong day at the plate in Day 2 of the tournament. Listed at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds, Elam is a wiry athlete that enjoyed a really good spring hitting in a talented and upperclassmen-led lineup for Northridge. During yesterday's contest, the right-hander consistently found firm contact throughout his at-bats while recording a double and being robbed of another extra-base hit by a great play in left field. The rising sophomore swings with controlled aggression and has good balance throughout his swing. He is a solid athlete and possesses a line drive, gap-to-gap approach hitting from the right side of the plate. Also being a skilled defender at the shortstop position, he will be a quality prospect to follow in the next few years in AL.

Brodie Jones SS / 2B / Opelika, AL / 2025

Jones continued to product playing against quality competition this weekend after enjoying a solid spring starting at shortstop and hitting near the top of the order for the 7A Bulldogs. Listed at 6-foot, 165-pounds, the rising junior is a wiry athlete and possesses solid skills both at the plate and up the middle defensively. Jones can really hit and collected numerous hits throughout the weekend hiting in the two-hole while showcasing quick hands that helps lead an accurate barrel through the zone. He is a solid defender at the shortstop position, and has enough arm strength to stick on the left side of the infield.

Sam Laney RHP / 3B / Northside, GA / 2026

Laney made a huge impact on both sides for Beehive Scout and helped lead them to a 15U Championship on the weekend. Whether it was tossing a quality outing in the championship game on the mound or blast four home runs on the weekend, the rising sophomore had a stellar weekend in both facets. Listed at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds, the right-hander has a frame that is sure to carry much more strength down the road and already has solid skills in everything that he does. From the right-side of the plate, Laney has a quick barrel through the zone that hits for power and can also run his fastball up to 80 mph on the mound with a good feel for a slider.

Ian Cartwright OF / Alexandria, AL / 2024

Cartwright got off to a hot start this morning bouncing a ball over the left field wall in his first at-bat for a ground-rule double. The outfielder later deposited a ball over the left-center field wall picking up a couple more RBI. The uncommitted rising senior has an athletic build at 6-foot, 180-pounds. There is plenty of room to add mass to accompany his pre-exisiting pop. He's been a sub-7.0 runner in the past with multiple mid-90 EV's at prior events. Cartwright also looked natural in the outfield running down several balls in the gaps. Another quality prospect in the rising senior class in AL still on the market.

Landen Douglass C / 3B / Mobile Christian, AL / 2026

Douglass was an underclassman who had a strong showing with the bat this weekend and caught the eyes of our scouts on Day 3 in Albertsville as he helped his team to the 15U Championship game. Douglass swings it well from the left side of the dish, has a short and compact stroke and seems to constantly find the barrel. Had a home run during game play on the final day of the tournament and also had a clutch at-bat late in their semi-final matchup as they were up a run with two runners in scoring position. Got a pitch over the heart of the plate and laced a sharply hit single back up the middle of the field that would bring home a pair of insurance runs for them in the sixth. Another solid upcoming sophomore in the 2026 class.
