PBR/NCBCA Coaches Poll: Final Rankings of 2019
June 5, 2019
Over the course of a long year, teams can get hot and teams can have some rough stretches. Each of the NCHSAA’s four classifications saw plenty of movement throughout 2019 in the PBR/NCBCA Coaches Poll. The final rankings reflect some of the parody that exists while rewarding teams that played well down the stretch.
Throughout the 2019 season, PBR worked with the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association to poll 70 high school coaches from across the state. The makeup of the 70 coaches was spread evenly between each of the four classifications, and each of the 8 regions in North Carolina. Every other week during the regular season, PBR would poll these coaches for their top 10 team in any of the classifications they felt comfortable voting.
The coaches participating did a great job of looking through their notes, team schedules, records, and taking this process seriously. For that reason, the PBR/NCBCA poll has become a trusted ranking within North Carolina.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the poll was put on hold until the end of the year. With teams working through a playoff bracket, the poll can get skewed by who is playing right now. With the conclusion of the state championships this past weekend, the coaches voted one last time in 2019, for the Final PBR/NCBCA Poll.
Each of the four state champions were voted into the No. 1 ranking in each classification. Two state champions were not ranked going into the playoffs while New Hanover was No. 2 in the 3A class and Uwharrie Charter Academy was No. 10 in the 1A class. Each state runner-up was voted No. 2. From there the polls begin to differ as teams that had great regular seasons, like Crest HS in the 3A class, being rewarded with the No. 3 ranking after posting a season record of 26-1.
