PBR Spotlight Game: Ottawa Nepean Canadians 16u vs OBJ (Red) 16u
MISSISSAUGA- The Ontario Blue Jays 16U (Red) faced the Ottawa Canadians 16U Saturday afternoon at River Grove Park. The Blue Jays swept the doubleheader 4-3 and 7-0 (No-hitter by Diego Dominguez).
Game one saw a pair of right-handed starters, Nick McDermott for the Blue Jays against Devon Robb for the Canadians. The 6-foot McDermott went five innings allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking two. The 6-foot-1 Robb threw a complete game allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out one, walking three and settled for the loss.
Both teams went back and forth answering each other’s runs in the third and fourth. Ottawa took the lead in the fifth thanks to an RBI single to right field by catcher/outfielder Connor Jones. The Blue Jays found some life in the sixth with two on; infielder Ryan Johnston beat out an infield single to cash in the tying run, and outfielder Austin Wilkie scored from third base on what turned out to be the winning run on a wild pitch.
Blue Jays right-hand pitcher Dustin Crocker came in relief and picked up the win with two scoreless innings.
Game two saw some magic by Blue Jays right-handed starter Diego Dominguez. The 5-foot-10 righty retired the first two batters in the opening frame, then got into a bit of a jam by walking the next two, but managed to induce a ground ball to end the first.
In the second, Dominguez walked the lead-off batter, but got some help from his defense as Ottawa outfielder Daniel Maguire lined a ball hard to the shortstop and doubled up the runner leaning too far off of first.
After that double play, Dominguez retired the next 11 hitters he faced. He was in a groove, locating his fastball on both sides of the plate and mixing in his curveball and changeup to keep the Canadians guessing.
With one out in the sixth, Canadians’ outfielder Trevor Fairholm was looking to break up the no-no and shot the ball right back through the middle, but Dominguez was in perfect fielding position and snagged the ball out of the air to his glove side.
In the seventh, Dominguez helped assist the first out as the ground ball went off his foot and right to his second baseman for the first out. Dominguez closed out the game with a pair of groundouts to short and finished with a no-hitter. He allowed four walks and struck out three.
Blue Jays outfielder Shanif Hirani had a pair of singles and two stolen bases. Johnston went 3-for-4 in game two with a double and two RBI.
Ottawa right-handed starter Connor MacMillan went three innings allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out two and walking two. He took the loss.
